Hello, Several people have told me about the "Silas DEANE Highway" in Connecticut when I have placed queries about my grandfather, Silas Dean LEWIS. I just did a search in the Archives of "the Hartford Courant" for my grandfather's name, and found this article: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HERO? CROOK? SILAS DEANE, AN ENIGMATIC FIGURE IN STATE HISTORY, GETS HIS OWN VOLUMINOUS WEBSITE Published on February 5, 2005, Article 4 of 15 found. You've heard the name because you've heard of the Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield. But be honest; you haven't the foggiest who Silas Deane actually was. That's quite fitting, it appears, because Deane was not a man easily understood. Even the people who give a hoot about him are not entirely sure what to make of him, though there is no denying he was a figure of consequence at the time of the American Revolution. Unfortunately, I cannot view the entire article without paying a small fee. ... I am told that my grandfather was an important employee (Engineer) at "Bradley Field" in Windsor Locks during the 1940's (and 1950's?). In 1952, an article appeared about him in the "Holyoke Transcript-Telegram" which he had moved when he married his 3rd wife, Mrs. Yvonne (LAMONTHE) (JARRY) LEWIS. An FYI is that my grandfather was one of the youngest of 13 children of John "Stanley" and Mary (CORKILL) LEWIS of Stoneham, MA. And, he was actually named after the long-time, well-liked Town Clerk in Stoneham, whose name was Silas DEAN. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. As per my other posting, I would like to know if there is a way for me to find out whether any articles or "death notices" appeared in any Hartford newspapers which mentioned my grandfather's name .. between 1940 and his death in Chicopee, MA, in 1961. (Especially interested in the death-notice of his second wife, Mrs. Hazel (SHAW) (McCAVOUR) (BEDELL) LEWIS, in East Granby, CT, in 1948.
