Grace, What is the name and author of the Family Genealogy book to which you are referring? I've been looking for Nathaniel. Part of the problem is that there were several Nathaniels born in the same area in the same general time frame. Not being able to identify Nathaniel means we have no idea of his age when Sarah was born, how many times he had been married, or how many times her mother was married. We don't even know if he was alive at the time of the Revolutionary War. Marilyn - The book is "Lineage of Reverend Richard Mather" published in 1890, written by Horace Mather. I grew up with a first edition. I've often wondered by no one seemed to have a middle name back then - that might help (although had I been a boy, I would have been Gurdon Clark Mather XIII). You're so right about what we don't know. One would think that when Sarah was listed as the daughter of Capt. Nathaniel Clark that they would have listed her mother too but women weren't considered important enough to list back then. When searching online, I've gone by her approximate birth year of 1769 and figured backwards 25-30 years....Even Sarah herself probably remarried after her husband Timothy Mather died in 1805. All I have is a document stating she was to handle his affairs, dated in 10/1805. Their youngest daughter was also born in 1805. Forgive me if I repeat myself here, but that youngest daughter ended up marrying in NY and moving to the same county I live in in MI. Her death certificate wasn't helpful at all. No parents' names, just born in NY.
