I am new to the list and am attempting to trace some relatives of my wife who emigrated to the USA.. In Ireland and on Ellis Island records the name is spelt Whyte but in 1900 USA census White is used. Nicholas D White (born Dec. 1872) is shown in the 1900 census living with his wife Hannah (maiden name unknown) and his unmarried brother Joseph E White (born Dec.1875) in Bridgeport, Conn. In 1912 when he returned from a visit to Ireland Nicholas shows his address as 584 William Street, Bridgeport, Conn. Looking for advice on finding out what happened to them. Brian Wray Ireland
Brian, I looked in the census for Nicholas. In the 1900 cenus I found one more person, Tessie Ryan, age 8, born CT, listed as step daughter of Nicholas. 1910: Nicholas is still living in Bridgeport; last name is spelled Whyte. Hanna is listed as Hannah E.; she had no children. Tessie is listed as Thresa Mary Ryan, age 18, niece in law. 1920: Still living in Bridgeport; last name is Whyte. Nicholas is 46, naturalized in 1896. came here 1890. Hannah is listed as Elizabeth H. A nephew, John Joseph White, age 11, is living with them. Hope this helps.
