Hello, I decided to learn more about my grandfather's 3 wives this spring / summer, and am surprised to find out how much I didn't know about him (or had long since forgotten). (He died in 1961 when I was still in high school.) I am also surprised at what I am finding out about his first 2 wives, the first of which was my grandmother. (She "had to get married" at both Age 17, and Age 36 !) The 2nd wife turns out to have lived a complicated life. Hazel SHAW was born and raised in Nova Scotia, and had a very brief marriage there to Alan McCAVOUR. Within a few years, she was living in Boston, and he was living in Minnesota. Soon after arriving, she was marrying Charles BEDELL. While married to him, she supposedly had 4 children with him. But, this summer I am seeing "hints" that her first 1 or 2 children weren't his. Through the Internet, and, because of placing queries, I have found 3 "cousins," daughters of 2 of the BEDELL step-children of my grandfather. It turns out that they know very little of their grandmother's life. But, they do say that the 4 step-children "adored" their step-father, one re-naming herself to give herself his surname. (This is strange because my father and his siblings did not like their father.) I have not yet found out when my grandfather, Silas Dean LEWIS, b1898 MA, married the widow, Mrs. Hazel BEDELL, but it would have been between 1935 and 1940, as I have just found out that his divorce from his first wife was in 1935. They probably married in Malden, MA, and I will write to that City Clerk next week. Soon after marrying, Silas or "Dean" and Hazel LEWIS moved out to the Springfield area, and around 1944 they were living in Windsor Locks, CT. But, I just found out this week that, when Mrs. Hazel LEWIS died in 1948, she was living in East Granby, CT. I know very little of my grandfather's life during the 1940's, so I have no idea whether he could have moved there also. But, from my newly-found "cousins," I am finding out that there "might have been problems." So, I am wondering if my grandfather and Hazel had "separated" in the 1945 to 1947 timeframe. My first question is whether there is any way for me to find out if both Silas and Hazel LEWIS were living in East Granby in the late 1940's, or whether Mrs. Hazel LEWIS was living there alone. My second question is whether or not her .obituary. or .death notice. would have appeared in a newspaper in East Granby. Or, which newspaper would have covered East Granby in the 1940's? I believe that my grandfather was working at "Bradley Field" in the 1940's, so what is the possibility that Hazel's "death notice" would have appeared in a newspaper in Windsor Locks, CT? Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: My grandfather, Silas Dean Lewis, remarried to Mrs. Yvonne (LAMOTHE) JARRY in 1952, probably in Springfield or Chicopee, MA. She had either 3 or 4 children from her previous marriage. I don't know whether she already owned the house, or whether they bought it together, but they lived in Chicopee when I used to visit them with my parents during the 1950's. It seems my grandfather was known as both "Cy" LEWIS and "Dean" LEWIS, depending on whether it was friends or family or co-workers, etc. And, while married to Hazel, he had a "local band," with the BEDELL children, and it was named "the LEWIS Swing-Billies." Also, a newspaper report in Chicopee, MA, in 1952, said that he made many contributions to Bradley Field while working there, and there is a "plaque" with his name on it - somewhere at the Airport ! (He was an Engineer !) My grandfather died in 1961, probably of heart failure. No one in my family has seen Mrs. Yvonne LEWIS since. She continued to live in Chicopee until her death in 1983, and I just found out that one of her grandchildren continues to live there. I am trying to get in touch with the JARRY grandchildren - whom I met during the 1950's.
