Author: dawbarton Surnames: Benedict, DeForest Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.connecticut.unknown/4728/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have started a blog at http://firelands.wordpress.com to tell the history of my ancestors, Platt and Sally DeForest Benedict of Danbury Connecticut, who founded the town of Norwalk, Ohio in 1817 during the settlement of the Firelands or "Sufferers' Land," a section of the Connecticut Western Reserve that was given to "Sufferers" who were burned out of their homes by the British during the Revolution. Platt Benedict founded the Firelands Historical Society in 1858 and was its chair until his death in 1866. The society has published a journal since its founding, which is a rich source of information about the settlement of the region. I used this journal and family documents in my possession to write the history I am posting on my blog. I post an episode every Monday. I hope that people interested in the role of Connecticut families in the settlement of the Firelands will be entertained and informed by these postings, and fill in gaps and correct inaccuracies in my research. Thank you for your kind attention. Please visit my blog and read of the role of Connecticut pioneers in the settling of the "Sufferers' Land." I can just offer an FYI. I have been trying to find more information on the .12. siblings of my grandfather. Most were born and raised in Stoneham, MA. One brother was Arthur who married Philomene LeBLANC. Her parents were born in the Prov. of Quebec, and I knew nothing else about them. I posted a query on the 2 Quebec Lists and a very helpful researcher found the marriage of her parents -- in Wilton, New Hampshire. ?? It turns out her parents and siblings were in southern NH for several years before they moved to Woburn, MA (beside Stoneham). I had a hunch that Arthur LEWIS' wife had some connection to NH, as in 1924 "she" bought an old farm in the White Mountains of NH. And, as I think of it, this same grandfather had a 3rd wife who was born in the Prov. of Quebec. She was a widow when they married, and she and her first husband had come down to the Springfield, MA, area as young adults and married there shortly after arriving. Mrs. Yvonne (LAMOTHE) (JARRY) LEWIS remained in the Springfield area. I'm mentioning this because the people and families coming down from P.Q. seem mostly to move to the "mill cities" - Manchester, NH, Lowell, MA, Springfield, MA, and all along the Connecticut River Valley and the Merrimac River valley. So, those would be the places to place queries about. I've seen several instances of young adults coming down to New England as single people, and either marrying someone they traveled with or met someone at the workplace they joined. Also, have you checked both the 1880 US census and the 1881 CAN census to see where the couple was at that time? www.familysearch.org And, I and others have access to the 1860 and 1870 US census. So, you could place a specific query about that. Offering as many details as you have. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. A quick check shows the name only appearing in Louisiana in 1860. But in 1870 a largefamily appears in New London, CT. And a young man is in Woonsocket, RI. Then the ones in LA and Texas. In 1880 there is a Joseph in Spencer, MA, which is in Worcester Co. I can't read his (probable) wife's name but it starts with Pi____. There are 26 PELOQUIN people in Worcester Co., mostly in Worcester, MA, that year and 11 in Middlesex Co., all in Lowell, MA. The GIBEAU name first appears in 1870 in New York. That's another state where people / families would have first come down to - and then moved to another state, like CT. The GIBAULT name first appears in NY in 1860. Doesn't appear in New England until 1900. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ballproject Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.connecticut.unknown/4726/mb.ashx Message Board Post: First, the Project website http://newenglandballproject.com was refreshed today and I thought I would give an update on the Project progress for the last two years: Date......# People....# Ball...# Immigrants/Stray Branches 20 Dec 2008..51, 227...10,322.......63 / 45 15 Dec 2007..43,802...7,003.......45 / 38 15 Dec 2006..28,785...4,960......8 / 5 Second, I spent a lot of time in 2008 cleaning up files, rather than adding new people, and the website finally went on-line 30 September 2008. I am guessing that the number of people in the Project now represents under half of what I expect to have on-line over the next 5 years. Third, my nubby fingers can't do all of the data entry. A significant part of what is now on-line has come from other people's GEDCOMs (many thanks). As well, I have received emails with corrections and small additions, as well as marvelous photos. If you find someone from your lineage on the Project website, it is almost certain that you have SOME data that isn't in the Project yet and I would really appreciate hearing about it, especially corrections. Fourth, there are now 164 photos in the photo gallery of the Project website including a US president, a British Prime Minister, a movie/TV star or two, and a few obscure authors. I would like to have 10 times that many photos, if people will send them to me; JPEG files in the 300k to 1meg size let me do some adjustments, if needed. I do give credit to the source of data and photos, as can be seen on the website. Best wishes for the season, David G. Just plain luck second Church I asked knowing where Mary Ann Murphy was born & where the family lived when her brother died in the War & there it was. Now I am back looking for his parents. Joseph Peloquin & Margaret/Marguerite Giveau/Gibeau/Gibault circa 1860's. Quebec Archives say no marriage in that Province for this couple. So again I'm at a loss. No hint as to where they were in 1860's outside of USA or maybe Ontario, Canada. Anyways the search goes on. My coomputer has crashed I am on a laptop of my husband for now so . . . If anyone finds this new marriage don't forget me. Thanks Rick Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
