Hi, Not sure if these are your people but I find the following living Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT 1850 Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT Cornelia Root 43 b.1807 CT Frances M. Root 11 Chas Root 8 Helen Root 5 Lucinda Richardson 60 (maybe a housekeeper?) Next door to the above are: Lewis Root 20 b.CT Sarah A. Root 22 (assume this to be Lewis' wife) They are living in the household of Myron and Elizabeth Johnson ~ so maybe Sarah's maiden name was Johnson? Just a guess... 1860 Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT Lewis Root Angelina Root Orrin Root 1 Next door is; 1860 Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT Cornelia Root 52 Charles Root 18 Ellen Root 15 Seems that maybe this Lewis Root married twice, as even though the "A" in Sarah A. Root's name could be Angelina the ages do not fit....you would expect if "Angelina" was still Sarah that she would be at least a similar age as Lewis. So possibly this Lewis Root has married again... As far as Hiram Root, you will not be able to identify which "Hiram Root" is Cornelia's husband or Lewis' father in any census prior to 1850 because only the heads of households are named in these census, so you can't know who else is in the household. I did however find that there were 3 Hiram Root living in Litchfield County CT in 1840, one in Canaan, another in Winchester and another in Litchfield... There is a Hiram Root found in the 1830 census at Goshen, Litchfield Co., CT in this household are to be found....... 1 male 5 but under 10; 1 male 20 but under 30; 1 female under 5; 1 female 20 but under 30; 1 female 40 but under 50 and 1 female 50 but under 60. That is how the earlier census were done. With Cordelia and Lewis remaining in Litchfield County it seems that this 1830 Hiram Root could be the right one, however, remember there are 3 Hiram Root in the 1840 census all in Litchfield County! Hope this helps Janice And there are men who scale the mountain steeps And there are men who sink in ocean's deeps, And there are men why on deserts die, And other men to starry heavens fly; And we shall fail, or soar to heavenly things, As our forefathers gave us weights or wings. ~ Alice Carter Cook

Hi, I am trying to find infor on my grgr grandfather Hiram Root. Hopefully the 1830 census will have him listed with wife Cornellia Smith . My gr grandfather Lewis Smith was born Sept 3 1831. In trying to track my Hiram, i have been totally cemented in. It seems Hiram was an extremely popular name then or he was a very busy man. I'm not sure which was the last census from which he disapppeared. Can anyone help me in trying to track my Hiram down. I gave up several years ago when my inability to hit the town hall circuit became clear to me.. I am now legally blind and it is quite difficult trying to sort through a lot of my old paperwork. I would appreciate any help you might be able to give. Thank you Ginny Ferrante

Thanks Marilyn. They really loved giving us puzzles to solve. It looks like Nicholas married in Bridgeport in the early 1890's. Where would I go to get the marriage record? Sorry list. That message was in error. It was to go somewhere else entirely. Diane
Not sure why this went to the CT genweb list, but you should be able to find these in a hardware store, or at a place like walmart. It's more common to find the metal bands that seal, but I have seen the rubber ones once in a while. The current thread reminds me to post about my Connecticut Whites. Brick Walls: Robert White. I find him in Hartford Co. He m. Elizabeth, ca. 1741 and had children , Elizabeth, Elifalet, Friend, Mary, Henry, Minor and Elifalet. Robert's son Friend was b. Nov 1, 1748 and d. Aug 31, 1824 at New Hartford.. He had children Friend jr, and George. Could he have had a daughter Sabra? His first wife is a big mystery. He also appears to have married 2 more times. : Elizabeth Hulet (Howlett, Hewitt?) Ginger unknown. I have quite a bit more on these families, and would be happy to share. Diane

I am new to the list and am attempting to trace some relatives of my wife who emigrated to the USA.. In Ireland and on Ellis Island records the name is spelt Whyte but in 1900 USA census White is used. Nicholas D White (born Dec. 1872) is shown in the 1900 census living with his wife Hannah (maiden name unknown) and his unmarried brother Joseph E White (born Dec.1875) in Bridgeport, Conn. In 1912 when he returned from a visit to Ireland Nicholas shows his address as 584 William Street, Bridgeport, Conn. Looking for advice on finding out what happened to them. Brian Wray Ireland
Brian, I looked in the census for Nicholas. In the 1900 cenus I found one more person, Tessie Ryan, age 8, born CT, listed as step daughter of Nicholas. 1910: Nicholas is still living in Bridgeport; last name is spelled Whyte. Hanna is listed as Hannah E.; she had no children. Tessie is listed as Thresa Mary Ryan, age 18, niece in law. 1920: Still living in Bridgeport; last name is Whyte. Nicholas is 46, naturalized in 1896. came here 1890. Hannah is listed as Elizabeth H. A nephew, John Joseph White, age 11, is living with them. Hope this helps.
