Marilyn - The book is "Lineage of Reverend Richard Mather" published in 1890, written by Horace Mather. I grew up with a first edition. I've often wondered by no one seemed to have a middle name back then - that might help (although had I been a boy, I would have been Gurdon Clark Mather XIII). You're so right about what we don't know. One would think that when Sarah was listed as the daughter of Capt. Nathaniel Clark that they would have listed her mother too but women weren't considered important enough to list back then. When searching online, I've gone by her approximate birth year of 1769 and figured backwards 25-30 years....Even Sarah herself probably remarried after her husband Timothy Mather died in 1805. All I have is a document stating she was to handle his affairs, dated in 10/1805. Their youngest daughter was also born in 1805. Forgive me if I repeat myself here, but that youngest daughter ended up marrying in NY and moving to the same county I live in in MI. Her death certificate wasn't helpful at all. No parents' names, just born in NY.  John Hill of Guilford, Connecticut married twice. His first wife was Frances ( ), who, according to two secondary sources, died in May 1673: 1) Talcott's "Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut," p. 615 and 2) NEHGR 57:88. I have checked Barbour, but have not been able to find the source for this date. Does anyone know the primary source for this date? Thank you. Hal Bradley

Hi Marilyn - Thanks for the tip on Howard's link as well as the overview on ship's captains versus sea captains. It was pointed out to me that, considering the location, a sea captain was more likely, especially since my exact Nathaniel Clark doesn't show up in the Revolutionary War lists. I have his daughter Sarah born in Lyme in 1769 but am not sure where that info came from, no name for her mother and I understand from one website I was on that records for Lyme were lost for several years around that time. I also was under the impression that Sarah and Timothy Mather were married in Lyme then moved to Lima, NY but can't confirm that either. I've thought of making a trip to the area but wonder how helpful that might be in the long run since I'm drawing so many blanks. He is not a member of this mailing list. Now about Captain Nathaniel Clark. He was probably a ship's captain and part of the "Naval" forces. Ship building and shipping were big industries in Connecticut in the 1600's and 1700's. Whaling was big, and New London was known as major a Whaling center. Many men had small boats that were able to go into many of the inlets along the Connecticut coastline. These smaller boats were able to navigate the Connecticut rivers and resupplied ocean going vessels with fresh food ands goods. There were Naval battles fought on Long Island Sound during the Revolutionary War. Grace, You need to click on the message board link at the top of Howard's message to reach Howard. A few greats ago, Sarah Clark, born around 1769 in Lyme, CT. Her father is listed in my family genealogy book as Capt. Nathaniel Clark. Captain of what, I don't know. I was hoping he fought in the revolution but cannot find a Nathaniel Clark as a Capt. Sarah married Timothy Mather 02/02/1792, supposedly in Lyme but correspondence with the various towns of Lyme, Old Lyme, East Lyme doesn't show them there. Not too long after the marriage, Sarah and Timothy moved to Western NY because I believe their son, Gurdon Clark Mather, was born in Lima, NY. Timothy died in Lima in 1805, no further date. Sarah may have remarried. Can't find her after that. Any clues would be most appreciated. Hoping for assistance with finding the marriage of Hannah Fuller to Josiah Read or Reed in Chatham, CT.......date would most likely be 1773 as I believe their first child was born May 1774. Many thanks Janice
You've probably looked at this site as part of your general approach to Middlesex County, but when I checked Jane Devlin's web site I noticed that there were several Fullers in Chatham, although not your marriage. _http://dunhamwilcox.net/barbour/chatham_barbour_e-g.htm_ (http://dunhamwilcox.net/barbour/chatham_barbour_e-g.htm) You might look for misspellings as the Barbour records have quite a few variations in them. Unfortunately no Reed/Reads show up in Chatham in Barbour. East Hampton, Portland and Middletown were once all part of Chatham until 1915 when the three towns divided up Chatham. (Connecting to Connecticut" by Betty Jean Morrison, pg 79). There are lots of Fullers, but probably not yours. There was one Hannah Fuller, but she married the wrong guy. Carol **************Hurry! I'm researching the family of Madeline Forrest, daughter of Charles and Harriet Forrest, who died about 1962, possibly in Boston, maybe back in Hartford. She married three times - Edward Burke, Charles Hooker, and Count Anton Luis Apponyi. Any obit material or other information would be much appreciated. Rod Smith, Wellington, New Zealand.
HI Rod and Glen I sent you several emails form the Hartford, cT Courant newspapers--and I hope they actually came thru for you. There is no obit listed for Madeline in the Courant. Let me think about other resources but the Courant was the main paper here then--and now. It actually has published continuosly since 1774! Let me know if there is anything else I can look up for you. Hi, I am trying to find the marriage date of Maria Althouse. At this point i am not sure if she was married in Ct or Berkshire County in Mass. Another difficulty is the name of her husband. the census records have him spelled with several different names both first and last. He came to this country as Francois Broucker which filtered down in spelling to Frank francis and was buried under Ferry X. and last name which the family has spelled as Brouker, but he has been lested as Baker, Bunker (not Archie, of course) and Beker. Her first child that i can pinpoint was an infant who was born july 8 1860 and died on the 10th of july.debility premature., in Great Barrington, Mass. I will try to check in Berkshire County around Great Barrington, but i thought since she was born Salisbury, Ct in aug of 1837, that would be the place she might have married. Her parents were Jacob Althouse (born in NY), sorry i don't seem to have the mother's name any help will be appreciated. thank you Ginny
