The family dates back to the 1700's, prior to South Windsor separating from East Windsor and being incorporated as a separate town in 1845. I believe that family group also included Aaron Buckland who founded the Hilliard Mills in Manchester; there is more info on that at wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hilliard_Mills Also, there are a lot of Buckland's buried here in town at Wapping Cemetery. I do not know if there is any relation to your Buckland, but I thought I would pass this along. Kevin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I hadn't seen that before, but just a year earlier in a letter she stated she was living with her son, Silas, and his wife, Nancy. But, that census is riddled with mistakes (it lists her has a "Male" and that she cannot read or write -- of which a beautiful letter survives in her hand just the year before this census). So, I like the clue that she was 65 and perhaps born in 1785 (as opposed to 1780-1782 of which I have seen before), I am still inclined to believe she was born in Connecticut from other more reliable sources. So I will widen my search for her birth year to include 1785. :) Thanks!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This is from History of Union County Ohio 1883 http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Union/Untp3BS.htm 242 - HISTORY OF UNION COUNTY DARBY TOWNSHIP - BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES HIRAM KENT, farmer, P. O. Unionville Center, is the fourth child of Silas and Olive (West) Kent, natives of Now Jersey and Connecticut, respectively, who came to Ohio in 1807 and located in Franklin County, where they were among the early pioneers. Our subject was born in Franklin County, in 1807, about three months after his family arrived at their Western home. The family subsequently removed to Greene County, and from there to Montgomery County, where they remained until Hiram attained the age of thirteen years, when they moved to Madison County and settled on Darby Plains. They subsequently moved to Union County and settled on the farm now owned by George Caldwell, which they afterward sold, and purchased in the same township another farm, upon which the father passed the rest of his life, dying in the fifty-sixth year of his age. His wife afterward moved to Appanoose County, Iowa, where she died. They raised a family of thirteen children, seven of whom are living. He wa! s a man of quiet, unostentatious habits, who had no aspirations for political honors and gave his entire time to the pursuits of private life. The subject of this sketch remained at home until April 16, 1829, when he was married, on the home place, by Rev. Samuel Bradford, to Miss Miranda Harrington, who was born at East Montpelier, Vt., November 8, 1807. To them were born seven children, of whom two survive, viz.: Cicero and Lucinda. The former married Margaret J. Moffard and has five children, three sons and two daughters. The latter is the wife of E. W. Barlow. Mr. Kent settled on the farm now occupied by him in 1838. It consists of 162 acres of valuable land. His advantages for education in early life were limited, and the substance of which he is now possessed has been acquired by his own energy, economy and perseverance. He is a thorough Republican in politics, and for thirty years has been a member of the Masonic order. His wife is a member of the Methodist Episcopal! Church Bio sketch of another son in Delaware County,Ohio, Concord Township; http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Delaware/delconcord.htm ELIJAH KENT was born Jan. 14, 1824, in Madison Co., Ohio; he is the son of Silas and Olive Kent; they moved to Union Co. when Elijah was but a child; Aug. 12, 1831, the father died ; Elijah remained with his mother until he was 24 years old, when, Aug. 23, 1848, he married Miss Charlotte Norris, who was born in Harrison Co. March 23, 1828 ; her parents took up their abode in Union Co. when Charlotte was about 12. years of age, she living with her parents until her marriage with Mr. Kent ; from this union there have been born to them eleven children ; of these, Ellen, Dudley and two infants are deceased ; Emily J., born Sept. 23, 1849 ; George, Sept. 9, 1853 ; Edward, Nov. 2, 1856 ; Andrew D., Oct. 12, 1858 ; John, Nov. 12, 1860 ; Silas, Dec. 27, 1862, and Benjamin F., Aug. 14, 1865, are still living; Emily and George are married, the others live at home. In 1865, Mr. Kent purchased and moved on to his present farm ; it contains 338 acres ; in addition to this, he owns a fift! een-acre lot in this township and 349 in Liberty. As a stock-raiser and shipper, Mr. Kent has been recognized for some years as one of the most extensive in the county ; he has also dealt considerably in real estate, and in a general way is prominently identified with the business interests of the township. Hello, Just a reminder that one of my "concrete-block walls" is James CLARK who would have been born anywhere in the 1790-1800 timeframe. A quick review: James CLARK "appears" in Little Compton, RI, ~1827. He marries in nearby Westport, MA, in 1829. He fathers a daughter there in 1836. During 1840's he "disappears." He might have been the James who got on a ship in New Bedford, MA, in 1844, which was heading out to the Indian Ocean; he signed on as a greenhand. He "deserted" in Australia in 1845. (He might have been the James who was on a small ship in the St. Lawrence River (Canada) in 1825.) (My "hunch" is that he was from a New England family.) His daughter, Mary Anna CLARK, b1836, probably married in Stonington, CT, ~1850. I don't know how she met John DEXTER from Killingly, CT, but the couple lived on the DEXTER Farm in Killingly until ~1885. (I have not heard of any other marriage for a Mary CLARK and John DEXTER ~1850.) (One curious thing is that Mary's older, half-sister, also from Westport, MA, also married in Stonington, CT.) Betty (near Lowell, MA) (I used to be able to access the "mariners data base" at the New Bedford, MA, Library. But, a couple months ago I had trouble accessing it. That's where a James CLARK was fouond.) (Information on the above families has been posted many times on the CT, MA, and RI Lists. Please see the archives of those Lists.)
