    3. So I guess I'll jump in as well. I frequently visit the Chicago area and am wondering if the NARA there would have as much info on my CT ancestors as MA? Much as I'd love to travel east, that's not a possibility in the foreseeable future but in Chicago, I have an almost 2-year-old grandson! Grace ----- Original Message ----- From: "David E. 3. Just a general "PS" from the grumpy old List Admin on Betty's message, but if any of you are fortunate enough to live a reasonable distance from a NARA research facility you really owe it to yourself to go visit it sometime. They have a wonderful website that offers a lot to genealogists, historians, and the like, but it just is not the same as a personal visit there. I live in the Metropolitan Washington, D. C. area, where we not only have the main National Archives (AKA "NARA") to use, but also Library of Congress, the main DAR Library, and numerous others, and I am like a little kid in an ice candy store when I go in there. :-) Just my personal two cents worth, FWIW, along with my apologies to Betty for jumping into the conversation. 3. I am seeking information on Martin Pinney who is said to have been born about 1766 in Windsor, Hartford Co., CT to Martin Pinney and Hannah Phelps. By 1800 he is in Thetford, Orange Co., VT; in 1810 he is in Hartford, Windsor Co., VT; in 1820 and 1830 he is in Windsor, Windsor Co., VT. He is not listed in 1840, but may be the 70-80 male in the household of a son, Haskell P. Pinney. Does anyone have access to the Barbour Index for Windsor, Hartford Co., CT? If so, would you check and see if his birth might be in there? He is said to have married Elizabeth Haskell, but I have no date or place for that event. Thanks for any information anyone can give me. Author: raytough Surnames: Smyth Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.connecticut.unknown/4754.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks for that Betty. Unfortunately these persons were born too early for my ancestor. I am pretty sure he was born in 1845 (from baptism records). I have seen 2 of the Daniel Smiths in the 1880 census, one a stone cutter living in Hartford and another a wool dyer living in Vernon. The stone cutter emigrated to the USA in 1871 with his Irish wife, however their eldest son was born in England before they set sail & I am unsure as to whether my ancestor was a) married before he emigrated and b) ever lived in England (I'm sure my gran would have mentioned this when speaking of the family if it was the case). I will have another look for the 3rd. There is a Daniel Smythe living in New York in the 1880 census. He is a sailor living in a lodging house with other sailors. He is also around the right age. As my ancestor was a merchant seaman this may be the person I am looking for, however there is no record of him in any later census. The family name was definately SMYTH however my great, grandfather (Daniel's brother) did change his name to Smith after living in England for 15 years so it's possible that Daniel may have done the same. Thankyou for your help, Angie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
