    1. [GenConnecticut-L] 1881 newspapers
    2. Hi listers I am at present involved in the following project: I recently purchased 6 volumes of 1881 newspapers. These papers are a collection based on news about President Garfield's assassination and later death. They are hundreds of papers from little hamlets in Maine to Florida, Washington Territory, and cities all over the US. What I am doing is collecting family history related items from these papers (ie, births, deaths, marriages, and any news articles about people where enough info is given to hopefully separate them out) and databasing them with MS Access, my hope being to post the items by geographical mail lists. If there is news from Wheeling West Virginia to post it on that states mailing list. I could also post by names I suppose also. I want this info to reach as wide an audience as possible. Any suggestions? Listowners, do you think perhaps a new list or lists would serve my purpose? Any ideas accepted. Thanks, Richard Leach (President, Greater Lowell Genealogy Club, Lowell, MA.)

    1. [GenConnecticut-L] GEROGE TEFFT OF VERNON, CT
    2. I am posting this for a friend who is writing a book or article on George Tefft and his wife Mary. She is looking for other researchers of this couple. George TEFFT, possibly son of James & Martha (SHEFFIELD) TEFFT, was b. ca. 1745, probably in South Kingstown, Washington Co., RI. He lived in South Kingstown until 1799, then in Lebanon, CT, 1799-1802, then in the Bolton/Vernon area of Tolland County, CT. 1810 census record from Vernon is the last record I have of him. Where and when did he die? His wife Mary died in Stonington in 1834. Where and when were she and George married and who were her parents? George and Mary had the following children: Martha (m. Levi TOTTEN); Sarah (m. Nathan KENYON); Lucy (m. Thomas TEFFT]; Elizabeth (m. Isaiah GREEN); Mary (m. William COTTRELLl); and possibly a son Caleb. Most of the children stayed in Rhode Island, but Caleb, if he was theirs, moved with them to Connecticut and died in Vernon, 22 Dec 1864 at the age of 73. Linda Mathew ctmathew@aol.com

    3. This is in regards to the person "annoyed" by the Barbour queries happening on here the past few days... The purpose of the list is to try and connect with others right? What real harm are the Barbour queries having? You never know where you might pick up that missing twig or connect with that other person who is searching for the same as you. I think we should all be grateful for good hearted people like Dave and the others that take the time and energy not only to look this information up, but also type it into and email and send it.. whether someone has been found or not. NOT finding the information in certain spots is sometimes just as important as finding it! Who knows, the next post might just happen to be someone looking for your family.. wouldn't you be excited then!! I understand the person earlier and probably others too are beginning to feel a little annoyed with the Barbour Queries, but it only takes a second to hit delete and get rid of the message. It on average probably takes me 10-15 seconds to see if I know a surname mentioned, and if not, I simply delete it. By the way, I live in St. Lawrence County NY and if anyone has relatives they are trying to locate in this area, I would be more than GLAD to help. 3. I wanted to thank everyone for thier help, and suggestions, and let you all know that I solved the Smith line. Roger Smith is the son of Isreal Smith and Esther Andrews. So I can breathe alittle now. Now it is on to solving who, William Terrel, (Terrill) was that married Esther Smith, so far I have not been able to locate a marriage record on them. Esther Smith was from New Haven, CT. I have been told that some of the records were lost to a fire.. Clues like family names have not helped, in solving William Terrel mystery, as I found my great great grandfather did not have any Williams in his family. He had names like Le Grand Terrel, his name was James A. Terrel, and my Great Grandfather was also James A., there was Garland B. , Edward , Jane B., Lillie, Delores (first born) in 1853, and a Ida M. It is not to say that the names are not in his wife's family another hard name to research. I do find lots of these names in the Georgia, NC, and Virgina area, however Esther Smith was born in 1802 CT. Notes from the NARA also state William Terrel as being born in CT. Somehow I do not think so. The only possible match for Esther is William Terrill, born in 1781, son of James Terrill, and Sarah Bradshaw. I have not ruled this out, but I have not found a Marriage for this William either. So that is my new puzzle, and other ideas. I'm going to see if I can use the Barbour Collection, if I can find it at the LDS center. Thanks again for all who helped. Wanda Clowater
