In an effort to repay all the kindnesses I have received from this list, I would like to offer lookups for anyone interested in the SAGE family. I have a copy of The Jonathan Sage Family, Descendents of David Sage of Middletown, Connecticut, Second Branch, compiled by Harold Kenneth Sage, privately printed 1951. It may take me a few days, but I will do my best. Margaret in NV
As an old Middletown Nutmegger, I remember my grandmother telling me the nickname came from a practice of the old Yankee itinerant salesmen of spices to rub a wood plug in nutmeg dust when they ran out of stock and pass it off as the real spice. Knowing these were traveling salesmen, I imagine they traveled much faster after pulling this con. :-) Can't vouch for this version, but it's a fun explanation. As Danbury's old P.T. said, "There's one born every minute." Ralph, transplanted to Oakland, CA
Just had to say that my mother was born and raised in Naugatuck, CT. and ever after was proud to say she was a "nutmegger". Even though she came to NV and people here didn't know what she was talking about. Margaret in NV.

I never heard that one lived there most of my life... (NUTMEGGERS) How ever I now live in VERMONT and people from CONNECTICUT are call FLATLANDERS.....
Marsha, and other interested individuals, Connecticut natives are Nutmeggers. I think Connecticut is the only state called by their nickname, but I could be wrong. CT is the "Nutmeg State", even though our old license plates called us the "Constitution State"... Nancy Pfaff Wallingford, CT > >Hello Connecticutians!! Hi Mary, South Norwalk is located in Fairfield County.I suggest that you subscribe to the new Fairfield County Genealogy list and post your line of research. There are a lot of helpful people subscribed to the list. Click on below to subscribe. Dana Rae, you might want to consider doing the same for your obit in Huntington. And while I'm at it,I am still looking for volunteers to transcribe Fairfield County vitals from 1850-1900. We hope to have them available on the internet by midsummer. Bethel is complete and Wilton is well on it's way.We are presently looking for a free home for the project if anyone has any suggestions. Please don't ask for any lookups as I don't have easy access to the records and am very involved with keeping the project going. Volunteering will help speed up the proccess. Dale, where were your families located in CT? If you can give us all an idea we might have a better chance at providing some clues. And for the record, I run a few lists and it is beneficial to most to post any and all info about searches to the lists, whether you are the searcher or the searchee. All, Originally, it was far from a flattering nickname. It is said to have originated from the practice of itinerant Connecticut peddlers selling wooden nutmegs (whittled from any dark wood) as the real thing to their customers in states south of New England. A "nutmegger", then, was a cheat and to "buy a wooden nutmeg" was to fall for a fraud. Hi, Well , I thought I had the Smith line solved, I was so happy I posted a Thank you, and told everyone I was moving on to the Terrel's. (The real Headache) and it got worse. Then again maybe better. Notes are below I had Esther Smith National Archives had born listed as 1802, CT. (no other info) parents as, Roger Smith and Alice Bingham . Roger Smith is the son of Isreal Smith and Esther Andrews. Now it is on to solving who, William Terrel, (Terrill) was that married Esther Smith, so far I have not been able to locate a marriage record on them. Esther Smith was from New Haven, CT. I have been told that some of the records were lost to a fire.. Clues like family names have not helped, in solving William Terrel mystery, as I found my great great grandfather did not have any Williams in his family. He had names like Le Grand Terrel, his name was James A. Terrel, and my Great Grandfather was also James A., there was Garland B. , Edward , Jane B., Lillie, Delores (first born) in 1853, and a Ida M. It is not to say that the names are not in his wife's family another hard name to research. I do find lots of these names in the Georgia, NC, and Virgina area, however Esther Smith was born in 1802 CT. Notes from the NARA also state William Terrel as being born in CT. Thanks to someone on the List I ruled out William son of James Terrel, and Sarah Bradshaw. This new information came my way, thanks to Midge of the CT list. 1. ESTHER3 SMITH (NEHEMIAH2, HUGH1) was born 1804 in Lyme, New London Co, CT, and died July 26, 1876 in Buffalo, NY. She married WILLIAM TYRRELL, Abt 1824 in Oxford, Chenango Co, NY. Child of ESTHER SMITH AND WILLIAM TYRRELL is: i. JAMES TYRRELL, b.* 1825, Oxford, Chenango Co, NY; d: May 12, 1906, m. ALINDA CRANNELL. Also is there anyone who knows of a Crannell line, Alinda was born in Unadilla, Otsego, NY. Moved to Chenago, I have found a Isaac Crannell on a Census for both places. *(note James A. was born in 1826. May 8th) I have papers and information form others with 5 different spellings of Terrel, they are Tyrrel, Tyrrell, Terrill, Terrel, Terrell. I found Esther on the 1850, 1860 Census in 1850 as Tyrrel, in 1860 as Terrill, along with James A. (son) I found no William Tyrrel listed in any of them, yet he was in Oxford in 1824 to get married, and James was born in 1826. Meaning that by 1840 Esther was a widow. Thanks to Midge, I know Esther had a Sister Eunice, a brother Nehemaih, and an Uncle Abel living in Chenago County. Please, does any one have any ideas? Thanks again for all who helped, and for those that may have new ideas. Wanda Clowater

My grandmother, Susan MAJOROS was born in Vilmany, Hungary in 1878. According to family lore, her father was Burgermeister (sp?) of the town. She emigrated to the US in 1888, entering in NY. In 1891 (?) she married John KEREKES originally from Fony, Hungary. They lived in So. Norwalk, CT . All their children, Susan, Margaret, John, Stephen, and Helen were born in So. Norwalk during the 1890s. My granodmother's sister, Mary MAJOROS THOPSEY, also lived in So. Norwalk. In which county is So. Norwalk? I'd appreciate any information. Thank you! Mary McAdam Michigan
