Hello, I have just joined GenConnecticut List to find out how I may research Connecticut records without knowing in which town or county in Connecticut my ancestor lived. Here's my situation. My grandmother, Bridget Finnerty, was born in Ireland in 1871. She was born in the work house, and did not know her real mother. Her husband, my grand father James Riordan of Fitchburg MA, was born in 1866 County Kerry, Ireland and came to Massachusetts in 1888. Bridget arrived a year later. I searched for their marriage record in MA archives, NH, and RI to no avail. These states chosen because James' family lived in MA, and after their marriage, in the 1900 Census, they were both living in Fitchburg MA. Just when I was getting frustrated chasing Bridget's trail, I received some mail from a second cousin who had asked my parents, now deceased, about our family for his research. The mail included a letter which my mother wrote to him in 1981. I was quite happy to see it. In it she described our family, and there it was.... "Bridget Finnerty came from Connecticut." I was amazed, since I was getting frustrated, and my mother's letter arrived and solved my problem. Not quite. I now find from their website that CT archives is not doing searches because they are microfilming documents. I am supposed to go to the town or county in which the event ( 1877 marriage btw. James J. Riordan and Bridget Finnerty) occurred. How can I do this, if I have no idea of what county or town? When will the state begin providing documents? What would be my next step? Thank you for any help you may provide. Tony Riordan triordan@msn.com Peoria AZ

Wallis, I, too, am interested in the 3rd Regiment in the Ct Line during the Revolutionary War. Does your request refer to the Revolutionary War or the Civil War? June Barrett
The 2nd Regiment CT Volunteer Infantry was in existence during the first 3 months of the war, its members enlisted for 90 days. Some enlisted in other units after the 2nd dissolved. They were actively involved in the battle of 1st Manassas (Bull Run). There is a web site devoted to this unit, found it by doing some looking about and running threads on Cyndi's List last night, could find it again if I had to but didn't bookmark it. My husband's ggf was a member of Co G. Joanne Gregory

Hi fellow/sister researchers! Would anyone happen to have any information about this military unit that was extant for the Spanish-American War (1898 is the year, I think): Company G, 9th US Infantry, Connecticut Also, would anyone know of any WEB pages that might have info on this military unit?? Thanks! Marsha Strong Gainesville, FL
Hi Maureen, I have a book, "CT Catholic Directory,1997 "( my sister & genealogical partner is a Catholic nun).Amongst the listings are the parishes in CT. In Southington, the only one listed for 1860 is ST Thomas (Est 1860) 99 Bristol St, 06489-4599, ph# 860-6284713,Fax #(860)628-7341. If it is not necessarily a Catholic church you are seeking, the State Library has microfilm on most of the early Ct church records. If I can be of further assistance or if anyone else needs info from this book, please contact me. Does anyone out there have any experience researching church records through the diocese of Hartford? Is it difficult, whom do I contact, will they do it by mail , what is the cost (or is it by donation)? I'd be interested in hearing any one else's experience as I have a great grandfather whom I believe was baptized in the diocese and while I have his parents' names and his date of birth, I'm clueless as to town, parish, etc. Thank you, Maureen
I hope I'm not out-of-line asking a brief history question? My 9th g-grandparents, John Ferguson and Sarah Hunt, bought land in Stratford in 1660. Why were people moving to Stratford during this period? From where did most of them migrate? Thank you, Bob San Jose, CA
