Hello, I am still looking for someone who might know of the ancestry of Abiel COOK, b. 26 May 1763 in New Fairfield CT. He married 1st Margaret KRIGER 18 Oct 1790 in Williamstown MA, and 2nd Julia Anna BARRAS 1825 in Hartwick, Otsego County NY. Abiel died 28 July 1849 in Edmeston, Otsego County NY. I am descended from Abiel's and Margaret's daughter, Lois COOK. I have a copy of his Revolutionary War Pension file, I have been to Sherman and New Fairfield CT, and I have been in touch with other descendants, but so far, no one (to my knowledge) has been successful in finding Abiel's parentage. Can anyone help? Listers: Can someone please shed some light for me? I am looking for information from anyone who might know of the Lydia LESTER (daughter of Elisha LESTER and Betsey FREEMAN) who married Jesse Starkweather in 1805. What I'm actually trying to do is determine which FREEMAN line Betsey comes from. I have confirmation of their marriage which lists them both from Preston, CT. What I can't do is decide who her parents were. Thank you, Carol
This is another request for Jacqueline - if it wouldn't be too much trouble would you check for Elisha Clark b abt 1793 and his wife Jane Baldwin Clark b abt 1797? They had a daughter Harriet Jannette Clark b 07 Aug 1819. I am stymied with this Clark line. Thank you so much - Peggy from ME

Listers: Thank you to each and every one who responded to my query about the CT statute regarding copies of vital records. I actually went into the CT statute website and I agree that many times it is up to interpretation. One person suggested taking a camera with you to the records office. I don't have an extremely high-tech camera which might work if they would allow it. I certainly don't mind hand copying the information -- it's just that I would like to have an "original" copy of the document. As I said, I wouldn't even mind paying the fee if I could actually have a copy of the original record. I guess I'll have to be satisifed with what happens in each town record office. I should be thankful that I've been able to accumulate all that I have and that in many cases the records have been preserved. Again, thank you listers for your support. Carol
I have a couple of ancestorial grandparents buried here in Susquehanna county, and their deaths were reported in the Montrose Democrat for Jan of 1851 and in the Independent Republican of 1856. They don't give much detail except his age when died and that he was one of the early settlers of this county. Listers: Can someone please inform me about the Connecticut Statute regarding copying (not hand copying) original information from a town's Vital Records. I am not opposed to paying a duplicating fee, but I've been told in several towns that I can only get a certified copy (and I don't even care if they're certified) of a death, birth, marriage, entry that has been typed by an assistant town clerk and then notarized. I have found this particular problem only in Connecticut. I've been able to obtain "original" copies from other states. Is this just a money-making venture? In two instances I've been spoken rudely to by assistant town clerks (I choose not to mention which towns) who think it is a nuisance to help people who are interested in their ancestors. I'm not a paid researcher; I am only interested in having original copies that were entered by a minister or whomever. Does anyone have any information? Is Connecticut atypical? I hope this doesn't sound rude on my part; I would just like to know why???????? Carol

Carol, The Preston Historical Society is on Rte. 164 in Preston. I've been there, but at the time it was closed. It's my understanding that they're not open on Saturdays during the summer months. There is a handwritten note on the door that says the following: Local History Inquiries - Joyce Steffenson, Apr - Nov, 371 Rte. 165, Preston, CT 06365 & Harriet Rosiene, 211 Rte. 164, Preston, CT 06365. You may want to try contacting Joyce Steffenson for the hours of operation. Also, you should probably check out the Preston GenWeb page at: http://pages.prodigy.net/kathyb/preston.html . It may be helpful to you.
