So this is a continuation of my letter re: Thwaite STRICKLAND.. This is the John STRICKLAND I said I had as the brother [maybe] of Thwaite STRICKLAND but can't find my source where I read it...I told you about it in my first letter. The John STRICKLAND who was in Long Island was my 12th great grandfather.. I have this on him. " m abt 1667 " TO Capt John 2) JACKSON the s/o Henry & Marry 2) ABBOTT (d/o George 1) Notes on John 1) STRICKLAND.. John came with the Winthrup fleet, but no record shows of what town he was from. There is no church that can be found that he was a member of. He was a man of good consideration evidently as he served on a special jury of the curt of assistance in May 1631, which gave the exempl. damages in the action of battery of DEXTER against Capt. ENDICOTT. At the court in Sep 1632 he was finded 3 pounds for refusing to watch, but at the general court in Sep 1838 it was remitted to him, as were those of Sir Richard SALTONSTALL, Gov. DDUDLEY, Edward GIBBONS, and so many others, that it perhaps gave more satisfaction that any session has evr done since, and may be called the grand remission term. He was admitted as freeman 19 oct and was sworn in on 18 May 1631. With certanity no more is know of John STRICKLAND, but SABAGES supposes that he was one of the patentees of Hempstead, Long Island, NY in 1644 and of it the first settlers at Huntington, in 1650. He had, we can hardly doubt a family, but Savage has no record of who they were nor who was his wife. His daughter Elizabeth STRICKLAND and Captain John SEAMAN also found spelled SYMONDS were married 1643/1644 at Hempstead, LI, NY. Elizabeth died 5 Aug 1694 and her widower md abt 1695 Martha MOORE. Wilma Fleming Haynes gencon@harborside.com >> Write or visit St. George's Episcopal Church (Church of England) on Front Street in Hempstead. They are the oldest church in the area and actually have a charter signed by King George. There is a cemetery surrounding the church which goes back many years before the Revolution and may contain some of your relatives. Dave from Long Island

    1. [GenConnecticut-L] "Bloodline of the Holy Grail"
    2. Has anyone seen reviews of or read the book, “Blood Line of the Holy Grail”? This author presents a scenario for the descendants of Jesus. That is to say, he begins with Jesus and Mary Magdelene and their sons and traces his lineage through seven centuries down to some names that are very recognizable if you have become connected with royalty of almost any kind. And further, there is recognition of lineage down to Queen Elizabeth II. The author is presented as a “noted genealogist” with royal credentials and the book was published legitimately by Barnes and Noble. I have read it and if you are a person of Christian faith it may be very threatening to you as it denies the resurrection and finds Jesus dying and buried in a different country where he went to evade authorities. While I will not buy this scenario I do recommend the book for the many, many pedigree chart pages which are offered starting with the Bible and going through many different royal lines, some of which could expand the information you may already have about your royal connections. If you know anything about this book I would appreciate your reactions via e-mail to me. Joan mmstrick@aol.com

    1. [GenConnecticut-L] Where was John Strickland?
    2. This summer’s reading included “Glastenbury for 200 Years - 1853” by Rev. Alonzo B Chapin and a committee of five other men, descendants of early settlers of the town. The first Strickland the author found any record of here is “Thwait” whose estate was settled in 1670. Followed the names of his children and their birthdates. As Glastenbury was carved out of Wethersfield lands, it’s history is spoken of. It mentions men being dismissed from the church at Watertown MA [to go to Wethersfield] but no John Strickland of Watertown MA is mentioned. A pastor in Wethersfield (1635-1641), the Rev. Richard Denton, is listed as removed [from Wethersfield] to Stamford CT taking a large part of the parish with him. Those names are listed and include Jonas Wood Sr, Jonas Wood Jr and John Seaman but no John Strickland. In 1644 Rev Denton removed with some members of his Stamford congregation to Hempstead LI but no list of who these people were is available. Given we know of Jonas Wood and John Seaman in Long Island we might make assumptions..... Rev. Denton died in 1663. Whether this information is useful to persons concerned with the Wood/Seaman/Strickland relationships, I don’t know, but I thought I should pass it along. I haven’t checked but I believe I haven’t previously heard of a Stamford CT connection for Wood/Seaman families. Joan

    3. Hello Ct. researchers. I'm seeking any info regarding my gr grandfather Hiram HAWXHURST/HAUXHURST who married Delia or Adeline HURLBURT about 1830/1835. Data I have states Delia was from North Manchester, Ct. I think they had about 6 children. She may have died before 1860 because Hiram's second wife was Hannah Marie LEONARD who was born in Sandisfield, Mass. She marr. Hiram about 1862 & I'm also looking for data on this marr. Thanks in advance for your help in my search, Ed Jones New Palestine, In.

    3. Hanover is in New London county. I used the following URL to locate this info. Seems to work quite well. http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi P.S. CT only has 8 counties. Try http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/CT.html Hope this helps. 1. [GenConnecticut-L] World War I draft registration
    2. Charles L. Dibble
    3. Forwarded From Another List: M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY Good Morning everyone: I played hooky from work yesterday and spent the day at the NARA Branch in Atlanta and it jogged my memory to pass on some information to everyone. Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date. When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least. The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task. So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918. And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left. For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to: NARA Southeast Region 1557 St. Joseph Ave East Point, GA 30344 In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies. The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG> If you have any other questions about the cards please write to me and I'll try to help. I've been "delving" into these cards for the past few years. But PLEASE don't ask me to get the copies for you. It is difficult for me to take the time off from work to visit the archive to do my own research <g>. And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on.

    3. I'm am looking for The family of Stephen G. Hills. He was born in Connecticut in 1810. I suspect in Hartford or surrounding town. His mother's name was Cynthia. She was also born in Connecticut. I'm looking for his fathers name. They removed to Fabius, NY about 1817, where he lived the rest of his life. Since he would of been only 7 years old at the time of the move, I suspect he moved with both parents as many Hills from the Hartford area moved to Fabius in the early 1800's. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there a Historian for Hartford? Any one researching the Hills of Connecticut? In 1810 in Fabius there was a Benjamin, Daniel, Joseph and Joshiah Hills. By 1820 there was the 4 already mentioned plus Daniel Jr., David, Joseph J., Joseph Jr., Orsemus and Samuel. Again any help on finding Stephen's father would be appreciated. Will share what I know of him while in Fabius. Thanks, Jodell
