    1. [GenConnecticut-L] Halfway River
    2. Can anyone tell me if there is still a river called the Halfway River? In 1750's my ancestor bought a grist mill on the south side of the Halfway River which was then the dividing line between Newtown and Stratford, Conn, and later the dividing line between Newtown and Monroe. Is the river called by some other name these days? Thanks Sue

    1. [GenConnecticut-L] Clipping found
    2. Karl L. Hakmiller
    3. All, I found a newspaper clipping between the pages of a book I bought today that might be of interest to some CT lister. The clipping is from (probably) The Hartford Times, it is undated but was in a book published in 1919 on a Rockville/Vernon activity, and the caption reads: Little Ellen Jendrucek of 15 Orchard St., Rockville, gets Sesquicentennial booster button from Rockville Rotary Club President Harry Flamm who has grown a heavy beard for forthcoming beard contest [Times photo by Hal Warner]. A picture of Harry Flamm pinning a button on little Ellen (who appears to be about 5 years old) is above the caption. Anyone for whom this clipping might be of genealogical interest may have it, first email gets it. Send me a private email. Karl

This is a family of German origin who immigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1730s, settled in the York Co. area. Some descendants become RODRUCK and then RODERICK, some remain ROTHROCK. Three brothers moved to the Winston-Salem NC area in the 1770s and left a lot of descendants there, and those are the ones I'm researching. 3. I was wondering if anyone would know where I could find information on the towns of Windsor, Hartford and Wethersfield, all CT. My grandfather collected books and I have inherited many of them, one is entitled 'The Code of 1660 being a compilation of the earlier Laws and Orders of the General Court of Connecticut also the Constitution, or Civil Compact entered into and adopted by the towns of Windsor, Hartford and Wethersfield in 1638-9 to which is added some abstracts from the laws and judicial proceedings of the New Haven Colony commonly called THE BLUE LAWS. That truly is the title, it was published in 1825 by Silus Andrus of Hartford. I thought I might try and find out about these towns way back in the 1600's. If thought useful I could go through the book and list some of the names. all the best John + - + - + - + - + John HG Tinker - London, England jhgt@btinternet.com Tinker Surname Research World-Wide http://www.btinternet.com/~jhgt/ + - + - + - + - +

    2. gencon
    3. I accidently hit the send button and wasn't really thru with my message. So this is a continuation of my letter re: Thwaite STRICKLAND.. This is the John STRICKLAND I said I had as the brother [maybe] of Thwaite STRICKLAND but can't find my source where I read it...I told you about it in my first letter. The John STRICKLAND who was in Long Island was my 12th great grandfather.. I have this on him. John STRICKLAND b abt 1592 England d 1672 Hempstead, Queens, Long Island, New York md abt 1623 England TO .................................... I have one child, a daughter who was my 11th gr gm Elizabeth STRICKLAND b abt 1609 England d ................... Hempstead, Queens, Long Island, New York md 1643/1644 TO Capt John SEAMAN.. 11th gr gf md2) abt 1695 TO Martha MOORE 1639 - 1698+ Source on John 1) STRICKLAND I have one child, a dau of Elizabeth STRICKLAND and Capt John SEAMAN.. 10th gr gp Elizabeth SEAMAN b 1647 Hempstead, Queens, Long Island, New York d ......... " m abt 1667 " TO Capt John 2) JACKSON the s/o Henry & Marry 2) ABBOTT (d/o George 1) Notes on John 1) STRICKLAND.. John came with the Winthrup fleet, but no record shows of what town he was from. There is no church that can be found that he was a member of. He was a man of good consideration evidently as he served on a special jury of the curt of assistance in May 1631, which gave the exempl. damages in the action of battery of DEXTER against Capt. ENDICOTT. At the court in Sep 1632 he was finded 3 pounds for refusing to watch, but at the general court in Sep 1838 it was remitted to him, as were those of Sir Richard SALTONSTALL, Gov. DDUDLEY, Edward GIBBONS, and so many others, that it perhaps gave more satisfaction that any session has evr done since, and may be called the grand remission term. He was admitted as freeman 19 oct and was sworn in on 18 May 1631. With certanity no more is know of John STRICKLAND, but SABAGES supposes that he was one of the patentees of Hempstead, Long Island, NY in 1644 and of it the first settlers at Huntington, in 1650. He had, we can hardly doubt a family, but Savage has no record of who they were nor who was his wife. His daughter Elizabeth STRICKLAND and Captain John SEAMAN also found spelled SYMONDS were married 1643/1644 at Hempstead, LI, NY. Elizabeth died 5 Aug 1694 and her widower md abt 1695 Martha MOORE. 3. This summer's reading included "Glastenbury for 200 Years - 1853" by Rev. Alonzo B Chapin and a committee of five other men, descendants of early settlers of the town. The first Strickland the author found any record of here is "Thwait" whose estate was settled in 1670. Followed the names of his children and their birthdates. Joan... I am interested in Thwaite STRICKLAND... he married my 8th great grand aunt, Elizabeth 2) SHEPARD the d/o Edward and Violet (CHARNOLD) SHEPARD.. Does the book say who his parents were, and was he the brother of John who went to Long Island, and where in England he was born? when in 1670 did he die, I have he died in Hartford, Hartford, CT...same for his marriage, I have that as 1646 Cambridge, Middlesex, MA.. You say it lists his children.. How many did they have? I have this in my notes of Thwaite: "Thwaite md abt 1646 Elizabeth 2) SHEPARD. Thwaite was born in England and died sometime before 21 June 1670 in Hartford, Hartford, CT.. That is the date his widow Elizabeth md2) Nicholas DISBOROUGH as his 2nd wife." I have Thwaite as the brother of John STRICKLAND who went to Long Island..I don't know where I got that piece of information, you know some of us didn't put our "sources" down...when we first started collecting our families...and kick ourselves forever until we find where we found it!! In "The Great Migration Begins" vol 3 p1787 Robert Charles Anderson clearly states Thwaite WAS NOT the son of John, but nothing of him being the brother of a John who went to Long Island... Thank you, Wilma Fleming Haynes gencon@harborside.com
