I noticed Thomas Shepard being one of the people quoted and wondered if anyone on this list is very familiar with the Shepard line. I have down that Abigail Shepard was the wife of the Daniel Pond who died Feb 4, 1697/98. However, my notations on this Abigail must be incorrect, for I have her being born 1627 in England the daughter of Edward and Violet (Wolverton) Shepard. Does anyone know more about this family? Thanks in advance. -Joy

My husband is a Martin, and the first one we can find is a John Martin who probably would have been born around 1840-1855, probably in Ireland and he died in Amherst MA, probably. Isn't Monterey near Amherst??? He was married to a Jeanette Avery, maybe born in Vermont or born in CT and moved to VT. Their son was Ernest Dwight Martin b. 5/28/1876 in Holyoke, MA who m. 1906 Bertha May Kelso and they lived in Huntington, Hampshire, MA. That's my husband's grandfather. John Martin had so many kids that some went to live with other people and some even took other last names, so perhaps they were actually adopted. Do you think it's possible that your John could be a son of my John? Are you sure yours was born in Ireland, or could it have been his father who was??? The Sprague and Rogers names intrigue me, too. I have them in one of my lines. I have a Love Sprague who m. Judah Bartlett born aft 1725 in Plymouth. And I have a Lovina Sprague b. 1808 in Hawley MA who m. Anthony Sears. I think she was d/o William and Rhoda Sprague, but nothing is known of any of these. I have Anne Rogers b. 4/3/1785 in Conway MA who m. John Starks III b. 1783 in Lyme NH, but whose parents lived in CT. She was d/o Daniel Rogers and Anna Brewster of Lebanon CT. Do you have any info on the ancestry of your Bertha Rogers in CT? Sorry I don't have anything specific for you, but I did want to touch base with you in case you think we may have a connection or two. Sue in MA
In a book entitled "The Social Fabric....1607-1877" in a chapter entitled "Husbands and Wives" the views of three of our ancestral great grandfathers who were Reverends are quoted. If you, like me, collect interesting tidbits about our ancestors I thought you might like their perspecitves on women. Nathaniel Ward found it hard to view women as anything other than "featherheaded" spendthrifts and "squirrel-brained" friskers after the latest fashions, ladies "fiter to be kickt....then either honour'd or hummour'd." He called "these nauseous shaped gentlewomen" no more than "gant-bar-geese, ill-shapen-shotten-shell-fish, Egyptian Hyeroglypics, or at the best...French flurts of the pastery." Thomas Hooker: "The man whose heart is endeared to the woman he loves, he dreams of her at night, hath her in his eye and apprehension when he awakes, museth on her as he sets the table, walks with her when he travels and parlies with her in each place where he comes." Thomas Shepard admired in his mate "incomparable meekness of spirit toward myselfe especially." As all of these gentlemen are my great-something grandfather's I would rather claim Hooker who is willing to set a table than Ward who apparently has no use for women at all (except, of course, for bearing children!). The book is by Cary, Weinberg, Hartshorne and Wheeler and published by Harper Collins College Publishers 1995.
I have recently published my Dad's book, "The Taliaferro Family - Three Centuries In America." after he spent 43 years researching the family genealogy. He passed away in 1995. If you are interested or have any connection with the Taliaferro family then you are invited to visit my web site at http://www.assentweb.com/taliaferro Thank you very much.

Sue Martin (known to her friends as SueWe or, Sue White Eagle) is a native of Massachusetts and lives in the Berkshires. She descends from founding fathers of not only Groton, MA; but Groton, MA Parker men who were founders of the famous Fort No. 4, NH...frontier fighters in the French-Indian Wars. She descends as well from the Groton, MA Tarbell brothers - captives of the Indians from Groton, MA! She has many pages online already but her newest achievement is the stories of the Captives of the Indian Wars in New England. She has outdone herself! Is there anyone who could check probate index for me to find if there is an estate listed for James Braman who died about 1740 when his youngest daughter was born? She was born in Voluntown, so I would assume that is where the probate would be. If there are also guardianship indexes, there might be records for Braman children, including my ancestor, Esther Braman, b. 1740. If anyone can check this, I can send additional names. Thank you so much. Joann Nichols
Dumas Malone, in _The Story of the Declaration of Independence_ [Oxford Univ Press 1954, 282pp, oversize] p83 says; "Towards the end of July, a child was baptized in East Windsor, CT by the name of 'Independence'...." Does anyone happen to know the full name of the child, the church where it was baptized, or whether anyone has ever contested that this babe was the first 'Independence'? thanks jim [BTW- This is about the 10th contemporary collection of bios that I've read on the signers since July. The bios are short, but there is a great deal history about the Declaration, and it is prolifically illustrated. An easy read, and a great starting place.]
