What is the best Ct Gen. Soc to join? It seems you need to belong to one in order to get into some town records (I object to this practice and think all the records should be open to the public, but don't feel like fighting city hall right now). Can anyone give me the name of a good one they belong to? Sue
Desperately seeking Samuel Samuel Leonard Brown Littlejohn, born July 20, 1885 in New Britain, CT Died August 28, 1968, Branford, CT m. Marian Crump Cowles Any tips? Thanks. Sue
I wonder if anyone would happen to be going to the CT State Library soon and wouldn't mind doing a look up for me? I'm looking for Lena Julia (Shaw) Hernandez who I believe passed away in CT in 1929/1930 in the Hartford/E. Hartford area. Also curious to know, if SS started in 1927 (I think), how long would a person have to live to be listed in the Index? I have a relative who passed away in 1934 who is not listed and had a SS #. Any thoughts on the subject? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Pat Z.
I've seen a lot of posts about the name HALL on this list of late, so I though I'd take this opportunity to ask about my great great grandmother. What I know is limited. According to great grand father's, Eugene F. Oviatt, birth Certificate, his mother was Eunice C. Hall, was 37 at the time of his birth (Oct 29, 1870, Watertown, Litchfield Co., CT). She was from Waterbury, and she married my great great grandfather, Dwight P. Oviatt on February 9, 1851, in Watertown, Litchfield Co., CT. Dwight was born in Watertown, the son of Joseph M. Oviatt and Amanda Northrop. Although, the marriage of Dwight P. Oviatt and Eunice C. Hall occured in Watertown, and the birth of their 7th child, Eugene F. Oviatt occured there, I suspect they may have moved elsewhere for at least part of the 19 years seperating the two events. The last letter I recieved from the records office in Watertown stated that they had no other information on Oviatts in their files. I would love to find out anything I can about the parents of Eunice, and especially her other children. My great grandfather, Eugene F. Oviatt, died 2 years after his son was born in 1893, and all contact with his side of the family was lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Robert G. Oviatt rgoviatt@nbnet.nb.ca http://www.smythe.nbcc.nb.ca/class99/oviatt/ Reasearching: NB=>CROUSE, MARR, BREWER, REDIKER, WOODARD, JONES NB=>MOORE, HERSEY, GRAY, JACKSON, MOREHOUSE NB=>POMEROY, GILMAN, MCADAM CT=>OVIATT, GREANEY, DALEY, LAMBERT Resources I have for lookup: "The Mourne Moores In New Brunswick, 1833-1983" by Donna Lee Moore Smith, 1983 "Crouse Family History: The Descendants of Philip and Sara Crouse" by Roguer Crouse, 1995

Middletown Births are listed in the CT Nutmegger starting Vol.19:1:181 ending in June 1995. I will look up middletown births for anyone for the next week if there are not too many requests. Helen in Kelowna.
I'm new to this list so please bear with me. The surname of Merriam is new to me in my research. It appears that a Susan E. and Myra A Merriam lived in Branford CT in 1905. Susan worked in New Haven for an Attorney Newton. I have not found her in the census for 1900 or 1920. Is there records for 1900 and 1910 available from Branford, CT.? Thank You Elizabeth

Hi, I am new to the list and am searching for more information on my Revolutionary War era ancestor, Amasa Stevens (Stephens) born April 27, 1750 in Killingworth, CT. He died at the tender age of 30 on May 21, 1780 Johnstown, Tryon Co., (now Fulton County) New York. He was scalped and killed by British Sir John Johnson and Mohawk Chief Josef Brant's raid from Canada on the Mohawk Valley. Amasa's wife, Margaret (Putman) lost her husband, father and brother all on the same day. Upon investigating, I find that the LDS has his lineage going all the way back to approximate the year 100 A.D. as it links in with the Spencer Family and Henry the IV.. Hard to believe, but I am wondering if anyone can confirm the following lineage. His parents: Marcy (Mercy) Wellman October 06, 1726 - 1751, and Stiles Stevens born June 26, 1723, both in Killingworth, CT. Grandparents: Gideon Wellman and Concurrence Hull, both of Killingworth Great Grandparents were: William Jr. Wellman and Elizabeth Joy, New London and Killingworth Great Great Grandparents William Wellman and Elizabeth Spencer, of Hartford Gr Gr Gr Grandparents Thomas Spencer and Elizabeth Bearding, of Stotford, Bedfordshire, England, and Hartford Gerard Spencer Alice Whitebread, born 1571 continues to royal line, both of Bedfordshire, England Thanks for any assistance. You can also find Amasa's tragic story in the Frontiersmen of New York. Karen

Rita - the book Rolls of CT Men in the French and Indian War 1755 - 1762 lists a Joseph Farnum as being a member of the 3rd Regiment of CT troops commanded by Ebenezer Fitch, esq. int he campaign of 1758 (page 64). In 1760 he is listed as a 1st Lieut. in the 11th Co. of the 4th Regiment under Capt. Palmer. He is listed as being from Cantebury. He enlisted March 24 and was discharged Nove. 8. (page 219 -220). There is also a statement on page 358 attributed to Colonial Records which states that Lieut. Farnum was from Canterbury. There is a Gashom Hall (not Gorsham though) listed in the campaign of 1761. He was in the 2nd Reg., 6th Co. Hope that helps! Sue

Looking for anyone researching English Rudds in Connecticut. I have a Edward Rudd(Thomas Edward) b. c. 1817 in England, came to Connecticut and then migrated to N.Y and finally to N.J. His wife was Alice(Charity A.) whom he married in New York. His two boys were born in N.Y--Edward and James H. I know there are many documented Rudds in New England, but from what I have read, nothing on my Edward(Thomas Edward). Would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Many thanks. Bev

Can people attend the reunions in Middletown CT without proving their descendancy if they have traced it but not kept original certified copies? -Joy (from John Hall Sr. and John Hall Jr.)
I just received a notice in the mail which reminded me of something I should make you all aware of. The City of Middletown will be celebrating its 350th anniversary on October 30, 2000. A few years ago there was a society formed, called The Society of Middletown First Settlers Descendants [1650 -1654]. It will be holding a meeting during this anniversary celebration and hopes to be sponsoring 23 family reunions. You may obtain information and be eligible for charter membership ONLY IF: you send $10 to The Society of Middletown First Settlers Descendants 1650-54, 48100 Desert Grove Drive #12, Indio, CA 92201-6758, along with PROOF of your descendancy from one of the 23 original settlers listed below. There is no deviation from this (I say this not wishing to be snooty, just trying to save you and Mr. Cornwell some time.) Also PLEASE send a stamped self-addressed envelope (Mr. Cornwell's postal costs have been large.) The 23 original settlers are listed as: Thomas Allen Nathaniel Bacon William Blomfield William Cornwell John Hall John Hall, Jr. Richard Hall Samuel Hall Giles Hamlin Daniel Harris William Harris George Hubbard John Kirby John Martin Thomas Miller John Savage William Smith Samuel Stocking Samuel Stow Mathias Treat Robert Webster Thomas Whitmore Nathaniel White Nancy Schott - There hasn't been a reunion of these families since October 1900. How many of you were there?!
I also descend from Capt. Henry Gilbert who married Elizabeth Belding (the dates are correct) and also through Mercy Gilbert and Samuel Barnes. But I show that Mercy was the fifth child, not the fourth. 1. Henry Gilbert b. 6 Jan 1683 2. John Gilbert b. October 1685 3. Elizabeth b. 2 March 1687/8 4. Samuel b. 7 Aug 1689 5. Mercy b. 1691 Is there a more specific date for the birth of Mercy?
