Hi Mom, I think this is where the Maleys are buried. I wrote 4 years ago with no luck. I sure hope someone offers to transcribe, I'd buy it! There is a lot of information held in the old ledgers that is very difficult to obtain through the busy folks at the St. Lawrence Cemetery Office. Even the genealogist I had hired had a hard time getting info. There must be more folks out there who need information from these records? For 15 years now I have been getting a little info at a time. I now live in Maine and have made the trip about 3 times there. Once I made the trip up from Virginia. I have also hired genealogist who told me that it was difficult for them to see the records. One visit I was able to get a lot of info from the ledgers, but for the most part they're very busy in the office and don't have time to answer all of the request. -----Original Message----- From: Melody [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, July 05, 2004 12:31 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [GenCT] St. Bernard's, West Haven / Transcription Project I wrote 4 years ago for information on the Maleys who are buried there and never got more than a promise. I don't live in the area, but would certainly arrange a trip to Connecticut to try this again. I did contact St Lawrence and the Archivist at the Hartford Diocese about a year ago about this, but I never heard back. -----Original Message----- From: Stefanie [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, July 05, 2004 11:55 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GenCT] St. Bernard's, West Haven / Transcription Project Why not make the offer to the cemetery to transcribe their records? Hello, As so often happens, I start to research one thing or one person, and 24 hours later, I have accidentally learned about six other things. Yesterday, tried looking on my CD-version of an encyclopedia for the AZORES, and was not successful. Out of curiousity, I did a search for .. Billerica, MA, .. and came across an article on .. Miss Elizabeth Palmer PEABODY, a famous educator in MA in the 1800's. Because she was born in Billerica, I looked in the "History of Billerica" and found out she was the daughter of .. Nathaniel PEABODY, M.D. Today I was looking through the archives of the PEABODY Message Boards and discovered that he is said to have been a .. Dentist. Because he had already graduated from Dartmouth College in 1800, had married in 1802, and had his first child in BIllerica in 1804, I thought that was a little early for .. being a Dentist. I just did a Google search for "Dentistry, History," and learned that there were many Dentists in England in the .. 1700's. But the first Dental School in the U.S. didn't come about until after 1800. (?) And, the Dentists who did arrive in "the Colonies" in the 1700's were educated in England. I also learned that the first woman Dentist in the U.S. was in the 1800's and was Mrs. Emeline JONES of CT. Here is a pretty good timeline for the history of Dentistry: http://cudental.creighton.edu/HTM/history2001.PDF Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. Dr. Nathaniel PEABODY and Mrs. Elizabeth PEABODY had two more daughters. The second one married ..Horace MANN .. and the third one married .. Nathaniel HAWTHORNE. From the Archives of the Message Boards, I have learned that there was a book written about the "Three PEABODY Sisters from Salem." And, there is a web site which discusses them.

My husband's grandmother, Elizabeth Warren Stevens, of East Hartford, was supposedly dragged by her husband's car when she stepped out to go shopping in downtown Hartford and her coat got caught in the door. AT that time, my in-laws were living in SC for military duty. I just found 2 old letters written to them by her from the hospital on June 25 and 26, 1945, saying that she was okay although she couldn't move her left leg. The next paper I found was an old yellowed scrap of paper that said "Serviceman's mother, Elizabeth. died June 27 and family requests serviceman's presence. Funeral arrangements incomplete." Nice, compassionate way of notifying him!! Of course, about 9 months before this, he was notified that he had a new healthy baby girl. When he called home--he was told the message should have been "Baby girl stillborn due to birth defects." Poor man must have been terrified to get any more messages from the Marines. At this point I am unable to get into the State Library in Hartford for the next couple of months. Does anyone know of an online resource for old obits and also newspaper articles? I would expect this might have made the news because it was so tragic and accident. Also, has anyone ever tried to get old hospital records in this kind of situatuion? I am a nurse and with all the new privacy laws, I am not sure what the situation is now. Would it be likely that the hospital might still have them? Thanks----Barb
Hello Everyone: For those of you who have a deep interest in how, when and where your Surnames were formed I would like to direct you to 5 new pages we have recently added to our web site. Many researchers have for years believed that all ancestors with the same Surname were at some point related. That is simply not true. When you get back to proving your pre 1500s ancestors you will discover that there are in fact many Surnames that have passed through many families that have no relationship whatsoever. The 5 pages mentioned also contain information on many Forenames and their creation and some of the pages are large so relax and take your time. THE ORIGIN OF THE SURNAME PART 1 THE ORIGIN OF THE SURNAME PART 2 THE ORIGIN OF THE FORENAME FORENAMES OF WOMEN AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE FORENAMES OF MEN AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE .......................................................................... There is much information here that should be of interest to all. Go to our web site at: http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/ Once there enter the link titled "ORIGIN OF SURNAMES & FORENAMES" this will take you to the index for the 5 pages. For those of you who are AOL members you may have trouble connecting to many pages that may come up with a message such as "Page Does Not Exist" and you can cure that by using your browser feature of Copy and Paste the URL to your browser and then enter from there. All pages contained within our web pages are free for viewing and study by all interested researchers. The very best to you all. Enjoy. Harold Oliver Director America's First Families

Hi, My earliest ancestor to come to CT was William Lyon. He arrived in Roxbury from England in 1635 and in 1686 was one of the original settlers of "New Roxbury", now Woodstock,CT. It is unclear whether he actually came here, but some of his sons did, as did some of his grandsons. William's name is on the list of settlers and he owned land. lineage to me is as follows: Son John stayed in the Roxbury area. William, son of John lived in Woodstock. His son, Moses, married Grace Child (still a prominent family in Woodstock)and had Ephraim. He married Esther Bennet and was an early settler of Ashford. They had Amasa, the father of General Nathaniel Lyon who was the first Union General to be slain in the Civil War, in 1861. Ephraim and Esther also had Esther, who married Ezra Arnold. They had Mary Caswell Arnold, who married Orrin Wilson. They are my great-grandparents. Dave David P. My mother's parents: Julian Leon GOLINSKY, son of Leon GOLINSKY and Pauline (maiden name unknown) was born on April 1, 1888 in the city of Kupel, Rivnens'ka Oblast, Rokytnyansky District, Volyhynia (Wolyn) Guberniya, Russia. Julian's mother died when Julian was only seven months old. At the age of 85 Julian died on April 4, 1973 in Community Hospital, Cobleskill, New York. Antonina Anna CZAPSKA, daughter of Jacob CZAPSKI and Bictoria KUSDIOSKA was born on March 16, 1891 in the village of Kupel, Rivnens'ka Oblast, Rokytnyansky District, Volhynia (Wolyn) Guberniya, Russia. At the age of 91, Antonina died on May 22, 1982 in Bridgeport, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Julian married Antonina CZAPSKA February 17, 1911 in Kupel and their first child Catherine was born one year later on February 17, 1912. Julian, Mark BOHACZ and Tit RUSIN departed Rotterdam, South Holland, The Netherlands on February 19, 1913 aboard the SS Campanello. After nine days Julian, Mark and Tit arrived at Ellis Island, New York on February 28, 1913. According to the ship manifest Julian was 23 years old, married, his occupation was laborer and he was able to read and write. His nationality was Russian and his race of people was Polish. Their last permanent residence was Kupili. Julian listed his wife, Antonia GOLINSKI, from Kupili, Russia as his nearest relative in country where alien came. Their final destination was to Julian's brother-in-law Piotr BOHACZ (a shoemaker), 116 West Albany Street, Oswego, New York. Piotr had arrived in the United States on April 13, 1912 and was Mark's brother and Tit's cousin. Antonina and Catherine arrived October 18, 1913 - destination Oswego New York. Antonina was a housewife and according to the Oswego City Directory "John GOLINSKI, matchmaker" resided at 4 Lawrence Place. Sophia and Apolonia (Pauline) were born on June 4, 1914 in Oswego, Oswego County New York Julian's application for citizenship (1940) states that the family relocated to Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County Pennsylvania in 1914. No month is given. Since Sophia died August 20, 1914 in Oswego, New York they must have relocated between August and December. Bruno, the first born son, was born on November 3, 1915 or November 15 according to his (delayed registered) Certification of Birth. Julian's citizenship application also stated that the family relocated to Bridgeport, Fairfield County Connecticut March 1916. The GOLINSKY family belonged to St. Joseph's Polish National Catholic Church on 45 California Street. Jane, Helen, Steve, cousins Joey and Eddie were baptized there. Dear Gene: Thanks for the information on Andrew Warner. I would like to suggest one change: I believe his first wife, Mary Humphrey, died before 1657, as stated in the Mormon Pedigree Research File. His only child with his second wife, Esther (Wakeman) Selden, was Jacob, born about 1658, and made a freeman in Hadley, MA, on 30 May 1690. I believe that means he was born in 1669 or earlier. My eighth great grandfather was Capt. Nathaniel Turner, who was born in England, and died in 1646 or 1647 (on Lamberton's ship). His eldest daughter Mary Turner, my ancestor, married Thomas Yale in 1645. Nathaniel Turner came, probably from London, with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630 and settled in Saugus. He became a freeman on July 3, 1632. He evidently married after arriving in America but the name of his wife is not recorded in my main source for this family, The Lineage of Jeremiah Mead of Greenwich, Connecticut, Soldier of the American Revolution - written by Mary Beeler Sawers in 1958. He was one of the first settlers of the New Haven Colony in 1638. He was lost at sea in 1646 or 1647 on Lamberton's ship when it foundered on its maiden voyage to England. In January 1646 or 1647 the ship sailed from New Haven with several planters of New Haven aboard, including George Lamberton, master, Thomas Gregson, and Captain Nathaniel Turner. The ship was never heard from again. My questions: 1. Who was his wife, the mother of Mary Turner? I have the name Margaret Leachland as a possibility but have no solid documentation. 2. I don't have the dates of Nathaniel Turner's birth or death. Much has been written about the tragic voyage of this ship. I have seen the date of its voyage listed as January 1646 and January 1647. Does anyone know which date is correct? Or perhaps his birth date? I appreciate any information that can be provided about these ancestors.
