    3. Hello: Does anyone have any info on Jehiel (Jehiah) Perkins, born ~1782 in CT, who is in the 1850 and 1860 Census of Guernsey Co., OH? I am trying to determine his death date and location, and find a probate or estate settlement with a record of his wife and children. Is he the father of the American diplomat, Charles Allen Perkins (approx 1830-1890)? I have the information in _The Descendants of Edward Perkins_. I am looking for documents to verify that material. Thanks, Steven C. Perkins ______________________________________ Steven C. Perkins [email protected] ______________________________________

    3. The Sperry family founded the Sperry company that was known as Sperry Rand in the 50's. The original Sperry invented the Gyro compass that was used on ships ca WWI. Lawrence, a son, developed the Gyro used for autopilots on aircraft. In 1914 he took a Curtiss Flyer on floats to Paris and won a $40,000 prize for the most stable aircraft in the competition. He flew down the Seine at about 50 feet with his hands off the wheel while his mechanic walked out on the wing. The residual company still makes most of the autopilots that fly. Lawrence was killed in an accident over the English Channel, but his brother went on to organize the Sperry company. In any event, I believe there are some good biographies of the Sperry's that could have useful data fro genealogists. Ralph Strong

    3. Hi Diane, I have the Willard BIXBY genealogy, and there are no SPERRY's mentioned in that, but in Roy SHERMAN's genealogy of the SHERMAN's there is this one name... Rufus Pratt SHERMAN, b: 31 may 1831 in Jamestown, NY married 13 Oct 1854 in Portland, NY Sophronia Neff daughter of Adams & CAROLINE (SPERRY) NEFF, who was born 2 July 1834 in Chautauqua, NY (Home of Pres Clinton now) .. In Roy's other genealogy, (Sherman's of New England) he mentions these: 1:) Jesse Sherman, - m: 3rd - 13 feb 1793 - in Woodbrige, CT, Lydia SPERRY (page 42 & 43) - dau: of Seth & Lydia (Thomas) SPERRY b: 25 Apr 1764 - d: 15 Aug 1809 2) John Sherman, b: 23 aug 1724 - m: 20 Mar 1745 in Woodbridge, CT. Dorcas (SPERRY) Lines, b: 22 Jul 1713 in New Haven, widow of Samuel Lines. She is the dau of Richard & Elizabeth (Wilmot) SPERRY.(page 268) Hope this is some help Jim - ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 30, 2004 11:41 AM Subject: Re: [GenCT] Benjamin SPERRY & other families - CT, Wayne CO, VA & Lawrence CO... > Jim, > I am interested in the SPERRY surname. 2. Sperry is a name in Mormon History. They converted to being Mormons. Have you looked on the LDS website familysearch.com to see what is there on Sperrys? You also might look in the Family History Library Catalog to see what records are available for research on the name, and/or the location. Often there are books compiled on the surname, as well as local geographical areas. Pat I am looking for Lovejoys in the same areas.

    2. Jim, I am interested in the SPERRY surname. I may be a descendant of a Wheeler Oviatt who married a Mehitable SPERRY. I am attempting to confirm my grt. grt. grandfather, Wheeler Oviatt, as their first son b. ca 1797 in New Haven or Milford, CT. They had another son named Richard Sperry Oviatt as well. The only 1797 record listed in Milford, CT court records for the family is the death of a son and a daughter. I feel this is most likely an error. I have never located any record which lists a Wheeler born to Mehitable Sperry and her husband, Wheeler Oviatt within church records, wills, etc. I am wondering if you might have seen any reference to a Wheeler Oviatt b. to Mehitable Sperry Oviatt or m. to a Rhoda Cornish (dau of Daniel Cornish) in the 1820's within any of the Sperry lineage documents. I live in MI and have very limited access to documents from early CT. The family is mentioned without their son, Wheeler, in EARLY FAMILIES OF NEW HAVEN, CT by Jacobus. I would appreciate hearing from you if you have seen his name mentioned in the SPERRY family lineages or other wills, etc. Thank you... Diane Prout

I have a murder story on my site about one of my great grandfather's brothers. http://skeerticat.tripod.com/pattisgensite/ If anyone goes there to check it out, if a window pops up for a password just click on cancel and it takes you directly into the site. Tripod is working on the issue and will have the password pop up removed soon. again Tyler!! a great site. I love it.
