Dear Margaret, I am also a neighbor of Lyme, CT. The Niantic Prison for Women is in East Lyme, CT. This is quoted from this website: _http://www.fairfield.edu/x1429.html_ (http://www.fairfield.edu/x1429.html) Author Andi Rierden writes, "Built in 1917 as a work farm for prostitutes, unwed mothers and other women of allegedly immoral character, "The Farm," as it is still called, has long served as a barometer of prevailing social attitudes toward women. " "Spread out over 1,000 acres of forests, lakes and meadows, the Niantic Farm was originally self-sufficient as the inmates grew their own vegetables and raised poultry, cattle and sheep. Until the 1960s, the prison maintained its own nursery where women could keep their children up to the age of two years." Deborah (Pelletier) Tajmajer
I don't know if this will help but I found an Ida Thompson, nurse with the Visiting Nurse Assoc at 35 Church St, r. 25 Blackhall in the 1923 New London City Directory The owner of the property was listed as Mrs. Elizabeth M. Buckley In the 1930 Groton Directory, there was an Ida J. Thompson listed in the Groton Classified section under Nurses - Graduate & Practical, at 80 Mitchell St Ext. If there is a directory only for Lyme, maybe you can find it there. Hi Margaret, I'll try to "look" around to see if i can get any info on it. Sorry for the larger type. I am 72 and visually impaired so it makes it easier for me to know if i made a mistake in typing. since this started about 3 years ago, i noticed that my old typing school habits aren't keeping my fingers from straying. Good luck and maybe someone else will have some knowledge., but i'll try checking at the local library to see what they can tell me. we have a women's prison near us and maybe they might have an answer. I'll try giving them a call to see if they might have something on it. Of course, it could have been a name change also. Ginny [email protected] wrote: Hello Ginny and thanks for your input. Hello Ginny and thanks for your input. This place likely closed decades ago and may have been a hospital/facility for unwed mothers and/or pregnant women, some who were in prison. A relative of mine recently came across a birth certificate that said a woman from a nearby prison had given birth to twins in 1942 at this facility. She stayed there for 4 months. The name is exactly as written on the b.c., Ida MS Thompson Hospital, no clue what the MS stands for. Our family lore says a woman in our family gave birth to a child while in prison (back in the 1930's or '40's) and we were wondering if this may have been the location. Margaret
Hi, I am on the border of East Lyme, Niantic Ct. I have not heard of a hospital of that name, but that doesn't mean there wasn't one. Any more details? Does the ms stand for Mississippi or the female address of Miss? Is Ida Thompson someone you are trying to find in genealogy or is it just a hospital? A nursing home? I don't have any of the Ancestry or Heritage Quest info, but if yopu put cslib.org in the url you'll find something about History and genealogy Biography vertical file. Scrolling down there is a name Ida M Thompson. This does no lead to anything other than the name. But since it is there, maybe one of the knowledgable clerks at the main section of the libray (Connecticut State Library) will know something about the hospital or how to find out about it. In trying to check the internet at the E. Lyme library or Town Hall i couldn't get anywhere there, but maybe the town clerk could give some info. Good Luck Ginny [email protected] wrote: Has anyone ever heard of the Ida MS Thompson Hospital in East Lyme? If so, the history of it would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, I don't mean to be presumptuous, but have you checked Maine? In chiecking my ancestors i discovered that the borders eventually separated states and some of the people "ended up" as another state. Ct., NY and Ohio for instance as well as Massl, NH and Maine. so who knows back then where Vt was included. No harm trying. The West Cemetery in Bristol, CT is now completed and online from the Hale Collection of cemetery inscriptions. This cemetey includes 4,141 inscriptins, includeing 1,851 that were just added. Much appreciation has to go to Alden O'Brien and Betty Alexander for there help in putting this large project online for you to use. Besides tha dates of death there is a lot more informatin that can be obtained in these files, many of the wives also have there maden names listed, and some include the names of there parents. Also there are many that tell what unit someone served in during various wars. This reading of the West Cemetery was done in1934, and there are some stones for people who were still living, most of these are there as there spouce and/or children are buried there. These were left in to give you some additional information. When time permits I will be getting more inscriptions from the 1930's to 1950's from this cemetery for the internet. But please don't ask me to find a certain grave for you as it is a very large cemetery. These pages may be found in the cemetery section of my web site at: http://www.rays-place.com and at the Bristol, CT GenWeb at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctcbrist/ Ray Brown
