    3. Hi Everybody, For the past few months or so, I have been working with my cousins, Johnny Knox Holcombe and Liz Knox Adkinson to put excerpt of my Aunt Gladys diary she kept during WWII. Johnny gave me permission to put excerpts from her mother's diary on my site, and Liz, who volunteered to do my web site when I put _Gramma Knox's Legacy Book I _on the Internet, has done a wonderful job putting the diary on the site. There is one kink with the thumbnail pictures on the title page of the diary. They don't seem to be there right now, but I have no doubt that Liz will be able to fix that. The URL is: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~peggyjknox <http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/%7Epeggyjknox> The explanation of the other two pictures that have been added to my site. On my welcome page is a picture of me and my son, Dean DeVirgilio, which was taken in my home on December 26, 2004, and the other is a picture of Aunt Gladys with two of her four children--Sammie Tabor on the left and Lewis on the right.. It was taken by my son Dean in 1997, when we stayed with Aunt Gladys at the Knox farm in MIddlefield, NY--a few miles from Cooperstown--for a few days. During the war, Uncle Lewie was a student minister in MIddletown, CT. In addition to the every day life that all Americans lived during that tine, the dairy includes things that were happening in the Knox Family during that time, including the illnesses and deaths of my Aunt Lil and my Grandpa Knox. I've tried my best to identify who is who in the end notes, and other things that I thought needed further explanation. It goes without saying, if you recognize I have something wrong, or would like further info, please feel free to let me know that. I do hope you enjoy reading. Shalom Peggy J. Knox

    3. Hi The lack of indexing for the Hartford Courant is a major annoyance for all of us who want to use it! That will go away in a year or so, when Readex, the same service as in your email, plans to have the Courant and the now defunct Hartford Times online. I belong to the Godfrey Library and they are using their services so it will be great to have them online and be able to study them from home. The wonders of modern genealogy! :) Thanks for sharing. Barb Stevens the hartford courant is not indexed here, and the time period is much older, but many early Connecticut and other state's newspapers are indexed here. 3. Hello, Several people have told me about the "Silas DEANE Highway" in Connecticut when I have placed queries about my grandfather, Silas Dean LEWIS. I just did a search in the Archives of "the Hartford Courant" for my grandfather's name, and found this article: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HERO? CROOK? SILAS DEANE, AN ENIGMATIC FIGURE IN STATE HISTORY, GETS HIS OWN VOLUMINOUS WEBSITE Published on February 5, 2005, Article 4 of 15 found. You've heard the name because you've heard of the Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield. But be honest; you haven't the foggiest who Silas Deane actually was. That's quite fitting, it appears, because Deane was not a man easily understood. Even the people who give a hoot about him are not entirely sure what to make of him, though there is no denying he was a figure of consequence at the time of the American Revolution. Silas Deane, a lawyer and merchant who was born http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=HC&p_theme=hc&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_text_search-0=Silas%20AND%20Dean%20AND%20Lewis&s_dispstring=Silas%20Dean%20Lewis%20AND%20date(all)&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&xcal_useweights=no .. Unfortunately, I cannot view the entire article without paying a small fee. ... I am told that my grandfather was an important employee (Engineer) at "Bradley Field" in Windsor Locks during the 1940's (and 1950's?). In 1952, an article appeared about him in the "Holyoke Transcript-Telegram" which he had moved when he married his 3rd wife, Mrs. Yvonne (LAMONTHE) (JARRY) LEWIS. An FYI is that my grandfather was one of the youngest of 13 children of John "Stanley" and Mary (CORKILL) LEWIS of Stoneham, MA. And, he was actually named after the long-time, well-liked Town Clerk in Stoneham, whose name was Silas DEAN. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. As per my other posting, I would like to know if there is a way for me to find out whether any articles or "death notices" appeared in any Hartford newspapers which mentioned my grandfather's name .. between 1940 and his death in Chicopee, MA, in 1961. (Especially interested in the death-notice of his second wife, Mrs. Hazel (SHAW) (McCAVOUR) (BEDELL) LEWIS, in East Granby, CT, in 1948.

    3. HI Betty The Hartford Courant is a very difficult newspaper to research since it is not indexed. The old copies are on microfilm at the main Hartford Public Library and at the CT State Library in Hartford, but it takes hours and hours to research them on microfilm. I talked to them a few months ago and asked when/if they would index them or release them to others to index and all the person kept saying was that the Hartford Courant is the longest continually published newspaper in the country and they own all of the old papers. Over and over---that was the answer I got to my questions!!! On the other hand, I recently went to a class at the Godfrey Library in Middletown and they had a program on old newspapers. They have signed with Readex I believe it is called, and they hope to have both the Hartford Courant and the defunct Hartford Times all every word indexed and online by late 2006. That will make things sooooo much better for all of us looking for old obits and news items in this area--but we have to have patience til then--not something I am good at. The use of this resource will be free to members of the Godfrey Memorial Library and will be able to be used from home. There are tons of newspapers there now, but none seem to cover my areas. I remember Bridgeport CT is well represented there. 1. Death in East Granby, CT, in 1948 ??
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I decided to learn more about my grandfather's 3 wives this spring / summer, and am surprised to find out how much I didn't know about him (or had long since forgotten). (He died in 1961 when I was still in high school.) I am also surprised at what I am finding out about his first 2 wives, the first of which was my grandmother. (She "had to get married" at both Age 17, and Age 36 !) The 2nd wife turns out to have lived a complicated life. Hazel SHAW was born and raised in Nova Scotia, and had a very brief marriage there to Alan McCAVOUR. Within a few years, she was living in Boston, and he was living in Minnesota. Soon after arriving, she was marrying Charles BEDELL. While married to him, she supposedly had 4 children with him. But, this summer I am seeing "hints" that her first 1 or 2 children weren't his. Through the Internet, and, because of placing queries, I have found 3 "cousins," daughters of 2 of the BEDELL step-children of my grandfather. It turns out that they know very little of their grandmother's life. But, they do say that the 4 step-children "adored" their step-father, one re-naming herself to give herself his surname. (This is strange because my father and his siblings did not like their father.) I have not yet found out when my grandfather, Silas Dean LEWIS, b1898 MA, married the widow, Mrs. Hazel BEDELL, but it would have been between 1935 and 1940, as I have just found out that his divorce from his first wife was in 1935. They probably married in Malden, MA, and I will write to that City Clerk next week. Soon after marrying, Silas or "Dean" and Hazel LEWIS moved out to the Springfield area, and around 1944 they were living in Windsor Locks, CT. But, I just found out this week that, when Mrs. Hazel LEWIS died in 1948, she was living in East Granby, CT. I know very little of my grandfather's life during the 1940's, so I have no idea whether he could have moved there also. But, from my newly-found "cousins," I am finding out that there "might have been problems." So, I am wondering if my grandfather and Hazel had "separated" in the 1945 to 1947 timeframe. My first question is whether there is any way for me to find out if both Silas and Hazel LEWIS were living in East Granby in the late 1940's, or whether Mrs. Hazel LEWIS was living there alone. My second question is whether or not her .obituary. or .death notice. would have appeared in a newspaper in East Granby. Or, which newspaper would have covered East Granby in the 1940's? I believe that my grandfather was working at "Bradley Field" in the 1940's, so what is the possibility that Hazel's "death notice" would have appeared in a newspaper in Windsor Locks, CT? Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: My grandfather, Silas Dean Lewis, remarried to Mrs. Yvonne (LAMOTHE) JARRY in 1952, probably in Springfield or Chicopee, MA. She had either 3 or 4 children from her previous marriage. I don't know whether she already owned the house, or whether they bought it together, but they lived in Chicopee when I used to visit them with my parents during the 1950's. It seems my grandfather was known as both "Cy" LEWIS and "Dean" LEWIS, depending on whether it was friends or family or co-workers, etc. And, while married to Hazel, he had a "local band," with the BEDELL children, and it was named "the LEWIS Swing-Billies." Also, a newspaper report in Chicopee, MA, in 1952, said that he made many contributions to Bradley Field while working there, and there is a "plaque" with his name on it - somewhere at the Airport ! (He was an Engineer !) My grandfather died in 1961, probably of heart failure. No one in my family has seen Mrs. Yvonne LEWIS since. She continued to live in Chicopee until her death in 1983, and I just found out that one of her grandchildren continues to live there. I am trying to get in touch with the JARRY grandchildren - whom I met during the 1950's.

The 18th century history of my family (Sturdevants of Connecticut) is a history of their migration up present day Highway 7, in western Connecticut, along the New York state line, from Norwalk Ct to Shaftsbury VT This line made generational stops in Norwallk, Ridgefield, Brookfield/Danbury, New Milford/Bridgewater, and Shaftsbury Vt. I want to title the history of this part of the line North on 7. But it struck me that my ancestors probably wouldn't know it as 7. Can anyone point me to any histories of this road, or is it just a 19th/20th century amalgam? What other names did this road(s) have? Did names vary by location? From what I could tell, at least in the northern half of Connecticut, it follows the Housatonic. Was this its origin and purpose? From 1708 to 1825 what would my ancestors know this road as? On my visit out there, I learned that Litchfield was midway between New York and Boston. Did this route include 7? thanks johnSteve

    3. Hi, I was wondering if there are any Connecticut Vitals online. I have access to Ancestry's 1959-2001 but I am trying to find a marriage between 1918 - 1919. Amelia (Tkaczuk) Kulikowicz had two children: Helen b. 1915 in Philadelphia, Pa. Stanley b. 1919 Hartford CT. We always thought William Kulikowicz was the father of both children until we found his WW1 Draft Registration which states he was single. In the 1920 Census William, Amelia & children were living in Hartford. By 1930 William was not with the family anymore and Amelia & children went by the surname Kulic. William's name in on his son's baptism record. We don't have a birth or baptism record for the daughter, Helen. Records show that William Kulikowicz was born in Nowosiolki Wilno, Poland. If anyone has any connection to this surname or where I could get the marriage record please contact me. Kind regards Darlene BC Canada
