A woman from Texas with roots in Louisiana, posted this link to one of the lists I belong to. http://info.bgordon.org/ Many of you asked about donating goods, rather than money, so maybe you will find some organizations listed here which are in need of those items, otherwise it is probably best to donate money. Not listed on this main page is the ASPCA which is trying to coordinate efforts to rescue the animals http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer Lisa
I'm searching for info about Albert George MURDOCK who served during the Civil War. He was born 1840 in Massachusetts and sometimes was known as George A. MURDOCK. His wife was Mary FISHER b 1847 in Germany and they had 5 children that I know of. I found him in the 1870 and 1880 census living in Windham, CT; in 1900 census the family lived in Willimatic, Windham county, CT. Their children, John, Charles, George, Frank and Clara were all born in CT. George's father was Archibald MURDOCK married to Maria BAILEY 1825-1892. They were married in Medford Massachusetts. Thank you for any help Mary Ann Villanova, Pa.
Your idea is great but these people have no home the Government Post office is closed along with banks and other Bldg in New Orleans . I have cried along with every one else . We need to be prepared for distasters and we are not . A lot of these folks used public transportation , It is hard to understand that these people have no homes , here in the Dallas Ft worth area we will provide for as many as we are able , our Salvation Army has asked us not to bring any clothes to the stadium , they have more than they have aplace to put them your local churches can advise on what they feel is best to do , Your idea is great only these people have cots in stadiums and any where we can find for them , . Maybe Fema or the Government will start finding homes for them at this time we have some trailer house in storage here . One of our reporter asked about them and was told we did not need them at this time . I am not sure if they belonged to Fema . There could be other around the country . As well as closed Army bases that could be used oh well enough Connie in Texas
I have been trying to track down the marriage of Charles Leddy and Rose Pryor of Waterbury and have been unsuccesfull. Is there a nearby town that they may have gone to for a quiet wedding. The wedding date was June 1900. Would appreciate any help of where to look. Thanks Louise R. Sheppard
While rescuers provide immediate help to those in the disaster area, we can donate toward humanitarian causes for an immediate response. Genealogists and family historians can also begin to think about helping preserve the family histories of those affected. Someday in the future when Katrina's victims are safe and secure once more, they will surely mourn the loss of the family records, documents, photos and other things lost in the storm and flood. We know as genealogists and family historians what a blow that would be if it were to happen to us. Today, we can look through our own records and see if we have documents and photos that will be precious to family who have migrated south over the years, or who have married people from those places. Now is the time to identify and safeguard them until the time is right to restore the documents, or copies of them, to the people who will value them so in future years. CNN has many good groups you can donate money that will go to all of the victims of Katrina... I suggest you donate to one of those groups...and you can do it by debt or credit cards, I believe. I did... That way I know it will get to where it is supposed to go. Cheryl Missouri

As I watch CNN here in Nova Scotia, Canada, I ache for the people living through this disaster, and for their families watching helplessly. I know the feeling of wanting to help but personally, I think donations to the Red Cross are the safest ones to make at this moment. This is about "We Care" packages messages The first ones were there with massive truck deliveries and are already in area within 12 hours. The ONLY place they couldn't get in is New Orleans itself. They're all around outside the city. Contact the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints nearest you and ask the bishops or branch presidents depending on where you live, how you can help beside money - such as help packing personal hygiene kits, etc. The LDS Humanitarian Service is worldwide, among the first in Indonesia, delivering special food to Niger extreme famine as we speaking.... No contact? Go to http://www.lds.org/ldsfoundation/welfare/donationshelp/0,16845,1335-1-9,00.html On this page, there are tons of information of what is always needed David Samuelsen
Before you visit, why don't you try contacting the Salisbury library at _http://www.scovillelibrary.org/_ (http://www.scovillelibrary.org/) and the Farmington library at _http://www.farmingtonlibct.org/_ (http://www.farmingtonlibct.org/) Be sure to ask if they have a cemetery index and if they have contact numbers for the cemeteries; you might be able to inquire about the location of graves before you make your trip. The CT State Library in Hartford has a wide array of genealogical resources as well. Visit their history/genealogy page at _http://www.cslib.org/handg.htm_ (http://www.cslib.org/handg.htm) Good luck. I think your idea is wonderful Betty,. but watching the news specials last night, what we need is a government to get out of the fancy Washington Offices, and get things moving in a hurry.(Both parties are at fault here.....) We have a MAJOR MAJOR HUMAN DISASTER in New Orleans. ACTIVATE OR USE OUR MILITARY, ARMY, NAVY, MARINES, AIR FORCE......GET THE SUPPLIES THAT THEY USE IN TO THE CITY, AND GET IT THERE OVERNIGHT. DECLARE MARSHALL LAW!!!. THEY HAVE EVERYTHING PORTABLE......THEY SET UP A HUGE CITY IN KUWAIT BEFORE WE INVADED IRAQ, AND EVERYTHING WAS PORTABLE...GENERATORS, FIELD KITCHENS, FIELD LATRINES, WATER PURIFYING EQUIPMENT......WE HAVE IT ALL ON MILITARY BASES AROUND THE COUNTRY. THEY HAVE MILITARY FIELD RATIONS.......LET'S USE IT, AND IT CAN BE REPLACED LATER.. LET'S START AN EMAIL FLOOD TO OUR CONGRESS AND THE SENATE... BIG DEAL, THEY VOTED 10.2 BILLION IN AID.....WHEN WILL THAT START HELPING????? THEY CAN AIRLIFT THE SHUTTLE FROM CALIF TO FLORIDA, BUT CAN'T AIRLIFT A FIELD GENERATOR????? It's wonderful that you're concerned, but please think before you send... most likely, the postal workers are among the people you are seeing on TV... It's not possible to deliver mail right now. Also, are you sure that the Katrina Survivors address on Switchboard is not a scam??? My daughter, Skye HULETT Ware, son-in-law & baby grand daughter live in Long Beach MS and have evacuated to a wonderful town called Green Hill Ala where the towns people are looking out for them and some 100 other survivors. He will be attempting to drive the 158 miles to Long Beach Ms where they live to see if the house and pets survived....Their town literally was flattened from ocean to the RR tracks and news reports show that nothing survived...However, they live another 3 miles inland and are hoping for the best. Hello, I must be one of only of tens of millions of people SOOO Frustrated at watching all the News programs of people .. dying in front of our eyes .. while waiting for "drinking water" or any kind of liquid which is drinkable to arrive at the Louisiana Superdome ! And, as of last night, two "infants" have died of dehydration there ! This week I've already posted on the MA List that I would really like to go by a 20-pack of ..Toilet Paper.. and ship it down there ! The more I watch the News, though, I see where "basic human needs" go way beyond toilet paper. They need FOOD and medicine. They need .. diapers and baby food and formula .. and senior citizens need diapers, also ! They need ..DRY.. clothes ... including undergarments ! How many of us have food, medicine, and "sanitary products" in our homes - which we don't really need ? How many of us have clothes in our home which we really don't need ! Do you have summer clothes you bought this year which you might not wear next summer ? Those people in Louisiana and Mississippi have probably been "living in" the same pair of shorts and t-shirt and underwear .. for a week ! And, they probably arrived at whereever they are being "sheltered" -- soaking wet ! My suggestion is to go to the supermarkets and/or stores and pick up their unwanted cardboard boxes .. and start .. filling them up ! Or, I've found out that "banker's boxes" at the office-supply stores are good for sending packages. I went to www.switchboard.com and found out the address: "Katrina Survivors" c/o Louisiana Superdome 1500 Poydras St New Orleans, LA 70112 OR, we could just send our "we care" packages to the following address: "Katrina Survivors" c/o, the Postmaster New Orleans, LA 70112 Even if the New Orleans Post Office has been destroyed, the packages should go to their "regional Post Office" - and they can decide what to do with them ! And, ... wouldn't it be nice .. if the United States Postal Service .. would allow us to mail our "we care" packages ... for free ! And, the same goes for .. UPS .. and FED EX ... I had occasion to want to use UPS to mail 2 packages at different times to Europe ... and I was "SHOCKED" at how much they wanted to charge me ! $50 for a very small, lightweight package, and $350 for a medium-heavy "banker's box." .... I know very well that the "American Red Cross" NEEDS money, and they "always" say ... DO NOT ..send "care packages." BUT ..... this is different ! In our adult lifetime, we have not seen and heard about .. such wide-spread DESTRUCTION .. and -- human need ! If you cannot send "we care" packages, then I have found that even www.ebay.com is offering a way to "contribute" to the American Red Cross - whether you are a Seller or a Buyer. I will be sending this message to other "State" Lists which I belong to ! Please feel free to pass my "request / suggestion" along to whichever Lists you belong to ! A SEPARATE SUGGESTION? Sit down and write a letter to these families - tell them we DO care ! Offer them as much sympathy as you can ! I'll bet that right now those 10,000 - Plus - people .. feel "totally isolated" from the rest of their State - and definitely isolated from the rest of the U.S. ! And, please say a sincere prayer to "your Higher Being" .. that food and drinking water .. get to "Katrina survivors" -- YESTERDAY ! And, not arriving for the first time - this coming weekend ! Hi, I am new to the list and am planning a trip to Connecticut with my elderly father to bring him to the places where his ancestors settled and lived. I am seeking some help in locating cemeteries, museums and other places that would be of interest to our genealogy/history journey. Specifically, I am looking for a cemetery in or near Farmington, Connecticut where John LEE and perhaps other LEE ancestors might be buried or memorialized. I have seen a photograph of a headstone or memorial stone from about 60 or 70 years ago that was from a cemetery in Farmington. John LEE came to Hartford in 1635 and then to Farmington shortly after that to settle and farm. He was born in 1620 and died Aug. 8, 1690 in Farmington, CT. John LEE's wife was Mary HART, daughter of Deacon Stephen HART. Mary HART died Oct. 10, 1710 and was buried in Northampton, MA. Their son was David LEE, born Aug. 1674 and died 1759. He married Lydia STRONG, daughter of Jedediah STRONG. I am not sure where these people were buried. Also, I am planning to visit Salisbury, Connecticut because our ancestor Rev. Jonathon LEE (son of David LEE and Lydia STRONG) went there to be the minister at the settling of the town. He was born July 4, 1718 in Coventry, CT and died Oct. 8, 1788 in Salisbury, CT. His son, Captain Samuel LEE, farmed and raised his family in Salisbury, CT. My great great grandfather, Dr. Charles Alfred LEE, was born there in 1801. Are there cemeteries there that might have LEE graves? What else around Farmington/Hartford and Salisbury would illuminate our understanding of our ancestors? Should I be looking for the David LEEs in Coventry? What might I find there? Any ideas, help, advice would be most appreciated. Thanks so much. Melinda in Oregon

My fifth great grandfather CALEB LOCKWOOD was born in Greenwich circa 1702. His daughter Amy was my ancestor. His father STILL JOHN LOCKWOOD was born in the 1670s, also in Greenwich. Question: I have not been able to locate the names of Caleb's or Still John's wives, and would appreciate it so much if any of the members of this list has additional information (or suggestions about where I might obtain their names).
