    2. So you like maps? There are some wonderful map sites out there, but one of the interesting ones is at the web site of the Library of Congress, the American Memory Collection. Their first page is found here: _http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html_ (http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html) Once there you can browse among multiple topics, some of which are "Cities, Towns", and "Maps". The town of Meriden, CT has a map that sports a border of images of all the significant buildings in town at the time of the creation of the map - mid to late 1800s I believe and you can zoom in to very high magnification and look at what your ancestor's place of business looked like. There are of course significant city buildings that are still there today. There are many things of interest to genealogists at the Library of Congress, you just have to spend a bit of time poking around to find just what you want. I think you'll be surprised. Cyndislist has a long list of map sites that you may find useful. Because CT is one of the original thirteen colonies, mapmakers were in business for many years and there is a lot for you to find. _http://www.cyndislist.com/maps.htm_ (http://www.cyndislist.com/maps.htm) This is such a broad topic that we could discuss it for days, but it's worth exploring for anyone. 2. In a message dated 10/29/2008 11:50:42 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, ctmoser.mj@att.net writes: For those of you who live in large states, all our towns run together. There are no unincorporated spaces. For instance, from the 1600's through the 1800, shipping and boat travel were major industries in the state. Boat were small enough to go up the Connecticut River to Hartford and even further up. Norwich in eastern Connecticut is on a river and was accessible by boat. Travel by land was not difficult either. You make a very good point about the town boundaries. Often times a man might own a number of acres of land, all contiguous but perhaps bought at different times, with part of them in one town and county, and the rest in another town and county. All this land might appear to be one parcel, but the records for half of it would be in one Town Clerk's office and the others in the next. Then of course you might find that the owner was described as "John C. Reed of Durham" and in a year or so be called "John C. Reed" of Wallingford all without having moved an inch. The Boston Post Road had at least two branches as I understand it as it came down from Massachusetts, and the stage coaches made regular trips from Boston to New Haven, delivering mail and passengers. The taverns where they stopped along the way to drop the mail and partake of refreshment and water and feed the horses was a meeting place and news traveled surprisingly fast. Another benefit of a small state. Some of the town boundaries in Connecticut fall along natural boundaries such as a mountain, a river, or some other natural feature. It is very interesting and helpful to use topographical maps online to look at the area where you believe your ancestor to have lived to see what part of the land he could have farmed, and what part lent itself to access to transportation such as a river or railroad. Family cemeteries were often placed on high rocky land that was difficult to plough. Swamps produced mosquitoes which of course spread fevers and were hazardous to the health in other ways as well. Cholera was a scourge as well. All you have to do is look at some of those old photos on the CT History site where the well sweep stood beside the barn to realize how difficult it would be to ensure the purity of water. 2. If you're interested in looking at the historical images that your Connecticut ancestors saw when they looked out their windows, take a look at the wonderful web site at _www.cthistoryonline.org_ (http://www.cthistoryonline.org) . There is a helpful tutorial that will speed your search if you are not familiar with the site. Click on Search and choose among the ways you wish to search, all the words, none of the words, etc., like Google. If you choose to search on a town, a surname, an object or animal (stream, factory, horse), or whatever you can think of you'll find something relevant. I put in Hubbell a while back and discovered my grandfather's photos from the late 1800s and I never had any idea they were there. Among them were some of the Hawkins of Oxford, etc. that were meaningful to me. You can find something that will make a connection for you if you can think of the right search term! 3. I was looking at that site this morning. I had never seen it before. I was a little confused at first, then I tried the Site Index. Good background reading for those searching for missing relatives, and everyone else. Connecticut is so small that it was easy for families to move anywhere to a new job. What I have learned about the history of Connecticut in the different eras has helped me find me more than one missing person. For those of you who live in large states, all our towns run together. The state is so small that a town 25 or 30 miles is thought to be "a long distance" away. Look at the development of towns in Connecticut, and you will see how what we would call "suburban sprawl" filled in the distance between the early towns of the 1600's. The growing population need land to live on. The entrepreneurial spirit of our ancestor built this county. After all they were coming from Europe where towns had already existed for centuries to a place where there was nothing but trees. At least in comparison to the lifestyle they had in Europe. One thing I have learned in 10 years of tracing my ancestors, is their livens were woven into the growth and expansion of this country. One person didn't migrate from one place to another. Groups of people did, over a period of time, wagon train by wagon train. one after the other. And the same thing happened here in CT. Groups of people moved to new areas and created new towns. Where 1 or 2 went, others were sure to follow - friends, relatives, neighbors. History is the story of the lives of people who lived in the past. They did what we read about. Happy Hunting, Marilyn CT Sharing creates connections; connections grow family trees. --- On Wed, 10/29/08, HubbellGen@aol.com <HubbellGen@aol.com> wrote: > From: HubbellGen@aol.com <HubbellGen@aol.com> > Subject: [CT] Great CT Resource > To: GenConnecticut@rootsweb.com > Date: Wednesday, October 29, 2008, 11:02 PM > If you're interested in looking at the historical images > that your > Connecticut ancestors saw when they looked out their > windows, take a look at the > wonderful web site at _www.cthistoryonline.org_ > (http://www.cthistoryonline.org) . > There is a helpful tutorial that will speed your search if > you are not > familiar with the site. Surely someone knows something that help me find Erastus Brainerd Cunningham b 1797 Hartford m. Salome Deming. Erastus had a sister Lucy and they both were students in Colchester under Elisha Niles. Erastus had a shop on Asylum street where in 1820 and 1830 he was listed as a silversmith. I know he had a daughter Mary who died quite young or at birth. He's listed on a land deal with Elisha Flowers and others in the Hartford area. Could he be the son of Harvey Cunningham? I'd appreciate any help or contact with a researcher able to do more dedicated research.
