    1. Modifying a PDF file from Google books

    3. Hi: Is it possible to repair a Google ebook downloaded from books.google.com ? I run a computer with Windows 98 with an original and paid Adobe Acrobat release 5 (I think the current release is 9). So I get continuously an error 9 (Acrobat is expensive but they forget to hire a good programmer to write the error messages at long...). Then I sent one file to a Linux computer, read it with kPDF, printed it to a postcript file, converted back the file to PDF format using ps2pdf12 and imported it back to the Win 98 computer. The file is readable but when I try to change it, I get the error 130 (no idea what it is). I tried to remove white pages (won't save) or to add some bookmark (won't save). Any hint ? Since I completely rebuilt the file with the PDF -> ps -> PDF process, I thought I could do what I want with the book (in my case, adding bookmarks and read it from Window 98 and Acrobat 5)... I found a solution. I use the screen capture feature of Irfanview and view the pages I want to keep. I start the capture gizmo, set with a 5 seconds delay, then I display the pages on the google web site by sliding them. Later, I will load them to a paint software to remove the borders and to erase each town/parish as I enter it in my database. I use the free Foxit Reader http://www.foxitsoftware.com/products/ There are versions for Windows (including Win98) and Linux There is other software for converting PDF files e.g. the free PDF995 suite http://www.pdf995.com/ which will extract text, DOC or HTML and has many other functions.
