    3. I was thinking of trying to pick up where my mom left of several years ago when she passed away. I much prefer linux to Windows, not to mention my wife gripes if I try to install anything on "her" PC, so I was wondering if there is any good software out there like Family Tree Maker?

If you like Family Tree maker, then probably anything will look good to you. Admittedly, software especially for Linux is pretty sparse. I'd say your best bet would be to try Gramps. Of course, it's possible to run a Windows genealogy program under Linux, I know several people do, I just don't know the details of how that's done. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/

John, As you might expect, there aren't a lot of native *ix genealogy applications out in the wild. Gramps is about the fullest featured or your can do lifelines + gdbi-ll; lifelines is a strictly textmode/curses-based application, while gdbi-ll is a BrothersKeeper-like graphic frontend for ll. Advantage of ll is is reports and the scripting language they're written in - gives almost infinite possibilities for whatever reports you want. If you want to get a bit more complicated, look into the combination of Apache + MySql + phpGedView - all opensource, all free, a bit more difficult to load/configure/maintain but not outrageously so. A shareware alternative to phpGedView is The Next Generation. If you're really a masochist, you can install a Windows emulator such as Wine on your machine and run just about any of the current crop of apps for Gates Universal Computer Virus. I'd never seen/used Linux until recently. After a few false starts, I got it running, added Gramps, then Apache etc and phpGedView. I had done all these things before with XAMPP and IIS (separately) so had a bit of background. But, even so, you will be as adequately served for genie work in Linux as you are in Windows - just less bad software to try! Paul
