I might stand corrected by someone? UTF-8 is more common, and I suggest you check with suppliers for the acceptance of this standard. There are many differences between UTF-8 and UTF-16, but anything that you can encode in UTF-16 you should be able to encode in UTF-8. It is also quite easy to convert from Unicode to UTF-8. Simply open your Unicode GEDCOM file in Windows Notepad and select "File->Save As.." from the menu and choose UTF-8 as the encoding option. You shouldn't lose any of the characters in the translation. Paul
