    3. Just out of curiosity do the files open in a text editor such as notepad or wordpad? Can you see anything in the file that makes sense? BTW did you follow the suggestion to browse thru the list of genealogy programs on Simtel? 3. Based on what my friend remember and on the spesial filenames used for the binary datafiles (DOSSEXPT.001) we believe the program we need is "Family Tree v1.5" by Nicolas Menoux of TLC-Edusoft. This program also seems to exist in a German edition called "Ahnengalerie" and in a French version called "Arbre Généalogique" I found a more recent (from 1997) version of this program here http://www.szolda.hu/download/program_hu.html , but it does not seem to handle the older fileformat. It seems the same author has published something called PowerGED, but so far http://www.powerged.com has been down when I have tried. I have not managed to get in touch with the author yet. And yes, even if the file is binary I can recognize quite a bit of the text inside it.
