He *does* make backups, right? :-) Aha. That information allowed me to solve the same situation on my computer. At some point in the past, I use some LapLink software to copy data from my old Windows 98 machine to my new Windows XP, and in the process OE stopped working on the new machine, throwing "Outlook express is incorrectly configured" errors. Uninstalling and reinstalling OE didn't fix it. I didn't want to do a system restore because it took about 14 hours to pump everything across and I didn't want to risk losing all that just for OE (which I hardly ever use anyway[1]). It turns out that the file had ended up being called "Default.wab" instead of "Mike.wab", because my W98 machine doesn't have USERs in the same sense that XP does. Renaming the file fixes the problem. [1] The only time I do like to use MSOE is for posting binary images to usenet newsgroups. My preferred news client produces posts which are RFC standards compliant, and people using MSOE can't see my images because MSOE doesn't support the relevant RFCs correctly. -- Mike Williams Gentleman of Leisure

But, it did not. On my Windows XP machine, Outlook Express looks for the address book in this folder: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book where <USER> is the Windows user name. The file is called <USER>.wab although the file manager will show it simply as <USER> and tell you that it is an address book file. Double-clicking it should start the same address book application that Outlook Express uses to manage the address book. If the address book application can't load the file successfully, this may indicate that the file is corrupted. If your friend is lucky, he makes regular backups and he can restore the corrupted file from his backup. He *does* make backups, right? :-) David Harper Cambridge, England

Amazing how many inconsistencies you can find in a genealogical database. I would get rich if my users pay 1 cent per 'error'. But it is all for free, so never mind that. The point is this: everyone who has put a lot of effort in building up his/her database is upset when it appears to have more than just a few errors. And most recording programs do not do a very good job in verifying. Download Genealogica Grafica from http://home.versatel.nl/genealogicagrafica/ and see what it detects in your data. (You will need to export to a gedcom in order to interface with the program. It has been tested on gedcoms with nearly a million persons. It is fast!) Tests include: - link inconsistencies - loops - loose ends (unconnected groups of persons) - date inconsistencies - unlikely situations When you let the program produce a map of birthplaces, it will also find misspellings in placenames. And it will also make graphicals of trees, inbreeding patterns and relationships. The Help is extensive. Hope this is a useful aid. Tom

Try a reinstall of OE and/or check for fixes/updates from the official Microsoft site. I hope your friend doesn't have anything in OE he wants to keep as he may lose it all. I had a similar problem with OE and it took some work in the Registry before it was up and running again. I do *not* recommend that to anyone who is not technically skilled. I no longer use OE or IE.

Any recommendations or comments on software packages for scanning paper documents and managing the resulting files? I'm looking for something which will scan to a format like pdf. Subsequently I would like to combine the files with other digital image files in a variety of formats and organise the lot into a database which would be easy to search or retrieve from. I do have genealogical software which allows images to be associated with people and events in the database, but I was looking for something separate to this. Regards: Roger Donne
As you have installed Legacy on your new computer it has a version dated from the day you got the file for installation - either on CD or by download. When you were using it on your old computer did you get the upgrades that it prompted you to download? You will then have a later version than the install one. If so you have files made with a later version of Legacy than the install file that you put on your new computer. You will need to allow Legacy to upgrade the version on your new PC so that the version is the same as the one on your old computer. Remember Legacy upgrades are free - only new versions need to be paid for. You will then be able to open the old files. Folks: A friend is having problems with the above. When he goes to open a message he gets the following: The address book failed to load. Outlook express is incorrectly configured. He has downloaded the latest version of IE which we thought would have downloaded the latest version of Outlook Express and would have corrected the problem. But, it did not. Any help would be appreciated. George
