    1. Married women's surnames?
    2. Terry Pinnell
    3. I've got myself a bit confused about a very basic point. I'm making some tree charts for a long-widowed aunt who uses her married name, say Mary Smith. But in FTM she is of course identified by her maiden name, say Mary Brown. How do you resolve the problem that the tree charts will be headed 'Mary Smith', a name she and her relatives haven't used for decades? -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK

    1. FTM: Editing a saved view
    2. Terry Pinnell
    3. A couple of years ago I carefully prepared several tree chart views for an individual 'Elizabeth Surname', and saved them. Recently, resuming my research, I've made many corrections/additions to her tree. I've also corrected her first name, which in fact is 'Betty'. But on opening the saved views, although all the detail changes are correctly reflected, the *heading* is not! It still shows, for example, 'Elizabeth Surname: Ancestors & Descendants'. A bug in FTM 2006? Can I change something to correct this please? Or must I remake the views from scratch? -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK

But it appears that the company just bought the domain and made it an "umbrella" website: it is strictly linked with other websites that advertise gifts, pets, and all kind of commercial stuff, and does not offer the GedLink software anymore.

    3. http://www.gedlink.com/ still exists, but has been revamped to genealogie.com (all in French). There is a place for Gedlink users to log in, so you may still be able to use GedLink. Any word processor or text editor can edit such a file. This means if you are running Windows you already have two included..... Notepad and Wordpad. But why edit GEDCOM files directly? It's far easier to just load it into a genealogy program and make your genealogical corrections and additions there, then save it back as a GEDCOM. There are several free Genealogy programs available too. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/

So far I have downloaded three freeware genealogy programs, installed it, noticed that they missed the feature to import GED files, then removed it from my machine. If you can point me to the names of some freeware programs able to work with GED files, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance, L

I doubt the problem is confined to FTM. Trying to sort date fields with abt., bef., aft., and all the variations is quite difficult to arrange. Dates - ie, full dates, d.m.y or m.d.y - are normally converted to an integer, and sorted that way. But add in the generalisations mentioned above, and creating an integer is difficult, if not impossible. The workaround is to figure out the correct order, and enter some spurious *full* dates that run in that order. Sort the kids, then go back and alter the real dates to the ranges you have. Paul

It can be downloaded also from Tucows. The problem, as I said, is that the installer doesn't work: it tries to connect to a server, it reports an Error 404, then it aborts the installation.

Yes, you can sort the children in FTM. Select one child and then use "People", "Move Child from". Move the cursor to the place you will insert the child and then use "People", "Move Child to". 2. Terry Pinnell
    3. I'm just resuming work in FTM 2006 after a break of a couple of years, so I'm a bit rusty. I have a list of 8 children. One birth date I've entered exactly: 03 Jan 1914 3 others are only within a Quarter: Bet. Apr - Jun 1907 (the oldest) Bet. Jul - Sep 1911 Bet. Jan - Mar 1919 (the youngest) I don't yet have dates for the other 4 intermediate ones, so for the time being I've entered: Bet. Jul 1907 - Dec 1918 But after sorting by date,("Arrange the children on this Family View in order of birth (oldest first)?"), they were displayed incorrectly like this: Bet. Jul 1907 - Dec 1918 Bet. Jul 1907 - Dec 1918 Bet. Jul 1907 - Dec 1918 Bet. Jul 1907 - Dec 1918 Bet. Apr - Jun 1907 <------ OLDEST Bet. Jul - Sep 1911 03 Jan 1914 Bet. Jan - Mar 1919 Why isn't the oldest shown at the top please? If it's a bug, seems to have been around for a couple of years... -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK
