If I browse the Parish Records in their Lincolnshire Special Collection then it won't tell me anything until I know the relevant parish name.- a problem I've mentioned previously. If I just search their normal parish births & marriages then I don't find any of these people. Do you know the parish name? Tony Proctor

Tony Proctor Hi Tony No I'm afraid I know very little about his beginnings apart from what is on his death certificate. I know he went to the USA married (Maria Mannion b 1843 Galway, Ireland) and had two or three children there, the first George William b NY 1870, returned to England prior to coming to Australia in 1876. I don't even know of any siblings to give me a clue. Thank you for trying I really appreciate it. Regards, Kate (Sydney, Australia)

    3. Tony, not sure if this helps but on civil registration, post 1837 there is a William Searby 1841, Mary, Sept 1839, Joseph Dec, 1839, Elizabeth 1842 and an unnamed male 1844 all born at Horncastle. They're great fun (NOT) as there is no information about the extents of each image - even worse than the days when findmypast's civil registrations were just the scans of the GRO index. It presents you with hundreds of scans, identified only by their consecutive numbers. The civil registration you found was in 1841-Q2 and I eventually found the relevant scans by dipping in as follows: 181 Dec 36 200 Oct 39 209 Jan 41 210 Apr 41 211 May 41 212 Jun 41 220 Oct 42 221 Jan 43 226 Sep 43 238 Nov 51 I found no references to the Searby surname, and only 2 Williams: Mar 1841 William Thomas Pell to William & Sarah Ann (Servant) April 1841, William Clarke to Richard & Elizabeth (nail maker) I didn't check the earlier registrations you found. I think there are several ways to interpret this but the Horncastle parish church obviously wasn't their one. Are you ordering the certificate for the civil registration? Tony Proctor

Tony Proctor Thanks Tony I really appreciate your efforts. I was toying with the idea of buying the certificate, I checked the birth records to see if mother's surname would be included and seems it would be but I am now totally confused. I have been scrolling through the Census to try to find parents names corresponding with his death certificate. I do realise there are/can be an enormous amount of mistakes on certificates and the information was so comprehensive (not a family Informant) but I think it has to be wrong. How can you mistake parents names, William/(Mary/Maria) M N Bruchmann for George/Ann which I found on the Census 1851 and Eve has just pointed out. Exact age for William, I'm taking this from his arrival in Australia 1876 age 35, hoping he at least knew his own age. I'm going to have to think about this as it's really only guesswork. Many thanks. Regards, Kate (Sydney, Australia)
