    1. Historic York archives open in new £2m home
    2. Wendy Archer via
    3. Forwarded from the Archives-nra list, with Peter Kurilecz's permission. Wendy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: PeterK Sent: Monday, January 05, 2015 4:53 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Historic York archives open in new £2m home Today the York Explore Library Learning Centre opens its new £2.1m flagship service in the city centre including a store and reading room for the archive, as well as a refurbished local history library and family history centre. The building has also undergone essential repairs and conservation to its original parquet floor and slate roof and other works. The city’s internationally-important archive was previously housed in overcrowded and damp rooms at York Art Gallery. The conditions placed historic documents, including the city’s first charter dated 1155 and its letter of condolence after the death of King Richard III, at risk. http://bit.ly/1BqOXmr http://bit.ly/1BqOXmr+ -- Peterk Dallas, Tx

    1. WANTED - examples of people of who were born deaf in the 1840's in England
    2. Anne Sherman via
    3. I am researching the lives of those born deaf in the 1840's for my dissertation and I am looking for examples. I am interested in all aspects of their lives in particular how they were brought up and who by, did they have deaf parents or siblings, their education and occupation, who did they marry and did they have deaf children. If you have someone like this in your family tree, I would be interested to know about them and their background. I am working my way through the 1851 census returns but known examples will be useful. Please email me off list if you have any information.

You said you don't have world access so I looked at voters lists for you, they are a bit hit and miss, even though they were at the same address from 1949 to 1972 some years there is just nothing coming up in the search. These are the ones I found: 1949 Lenton Frank, builder Lenton Mrs Frank, M.W. [married woman] 1958 & 1962 Lenton Frank V, contractor Lenton Mrs Nellie B Lenton Miss Margaret, buyer 1963 Lenton Frank, builder Lenton Mrs Nellie Lenton Miss Margaret, purchaser 1968 Lenton Mrs Nellie Lenton Miss Margaret, purchaser 1972 Lenton Nellie Lenton Margaret, purchaser all at 48 Patricia Ave, North York, Ontario I'd guess (though its not writ in stone) that Frank died sometime between 1963 and 1968 and it looks like Nellie was still around in 1972. It also would appear that they may have had at least one more child than you already knew about. -- Tickettyboo

    3. Violet arrived from Montreal Canada aged 8 monthson the ship "Corsica" and docked at Liverpool 31/8/1915. This leads us to an intriguing point. With the almost-universality of mobile phones, landlines are rapidly becoming about as relevant as fax machines. The copper (or fibre) connection to the home will soon be, for most people, only there for data. And with the slow demise of the landline telephone, that of directories, too. Genealogists of the future will rue the end of residential telephone directories. The electoral roll records will also become more and more limited, as more people elect (pun intended) to opt out of publication of their address. If Census records' availability will always have stopped at 1911, that closes another source of geographical information. This century, and not far into it, will mark the point where addresses became far more difficult to trace for historians to come, despite the prevalence of computer records. What will they use instead? Will Facebook, Twitter and their successors maintain records, and make them available for researchers after their data subjects have passed away? Interesting times.
