TNA have extensive Merchant Navy records, particularly the register of Merchant seamen from 1835, with lists of ships, opening access to log books from 1850, with voyage details. Download their leaflet to see the slightly different coverage at different dates. Masters and Mates tickets were kept from 1845. I would also recommend the (rather more clearly explained) book by Chris and Michael Watts, 'My Ancestor was a Merchant Seaman (pub SOG) There are certain records at the National Maritime Museum - applications for Masters' certificates, for example, but you need the number from TNA first, Modern records from 1929 may be in Cardiff. If a seaman died leaving family in need, there may be a Trinity House Petition (film at SOG and some printed. Lloyd's Captains registers from 1869-1948 show birth dates, place of qualification, voyages etc. losses of ships. The Mariners Mirror has a lot of background stuff too. BUT 1. It was a common enough name in Norfolk -you may have the wrong one. 2. Children were not necessarily baptised as infants - have you checked the actual registers to see if it is a multiple late baptism or if a birth date is given for once? If not, I would do that, and also look for more baptisms, not necessarily in the same parish. Some of the Howletts were framers -try wills to see if they help. > EVE Author of The McLaughlin Guides for Family Historians Secretary, Bucks Genealogical Society

Quite a lot of my relations in the late 19th and early 20th century were sailors in the merchant navy. Does anyone know if the registers of Catholic baptisms are accessible for Oxford from the 1940s? Because they're relatively recent, they may still be "active", and they may even be closed to public access. I just wondered if anyone here has such knowledge, or can suggest where to look. Tony Proctor

I have a death certificate dated the 6th Feb 1842 for William SAUNDERS an agricultral labourer who died aged 68 in Sevenoaks Union Workhouse in Kent. I have now seen on FamilySearch a burial 9th Feb 1842 at Chiddingstone, Kent for William SAUNDERS age 65. I think this is probably the same man but I am unable to find this William SAUNDERS in the 1841 Census. I am hoping that this is the William SAUNDERS that baptised a daughter Eliza on the 12th April 1818 at Edenbridge, Kent and was probably married on 29th June 1817 at Sundridge, Kent. I have seen a 1820 settlement examination for William SAUNDERS residing in Edenbridge. this states that he was born in Crowhurst (no county specified) and had settlement in Chiddingstone. Can anybody help with an 1841 Census entry or a baptism for William? Jill
