Perhaps Facebook has taken the place of the mailing lists? Forums and social networking sites have now largely replaced Usenet. "Beyond Blue" now has an online "Men in Sheds" at http://www.theshedonline.org.au/ with a page for genealogists. I signed up for it at the beginning, but haven't been back.
