I posted about this man in Feb 2011 and was given Tasmanian marriage details. I missed Rex's reply with inquest details. Sorry Rex. In 2000, Debbie Godbold posted to the Rootsweb AUS-VIC list: "Hi everyone, Anyone interested in MING, originating from Buckinghamshire in England? One went to Portland and married James BAILEY in 1850, then went to the goldfields. Some settled in Melbourne, after first tasting life in Tasmania. One from Tasmania, John MING, arrived in Melbourne in 1852 and was killed the day he arrived. There are apparently a couple of records relating to his death in in Elsie Graham's book, "Births, Deaths and Marriages from the Argus Newspaper, Melbourne, Vol. III, M-P, 1846 - 1853" (1984, Melbourne) and I think it is in the same book the following inquest entry "Argus, 26 Feb 1852". I haven't seen the book, so don't know the format. This is just the reference I was given." The entry in the "Argus" is on Trove, and is identical to the listing in the Index. I am finding him just as much of a "brick wall" as Debbie did. The one who married James Bailey was Martha, related to the original couple in Buckinghamshire, Richard Ming and Ann Giltrow. They have a son John born at about the right time, but another John came along 9 years later. Debbie's email address no longer works. Is she still active? The English origin would explain why John never had a Chinese name. I now have two contacts wanting to know about him. Does anybody have any "lateral thinking" ideas? I have posted to the surname list on Genealogy.com.
