    1. St Peters Church,Cooks River, graveyard - causes of death
    2. The St. Peter's Cooks River History Group has complied a collection of nineteenth century newspaper articles referring to the deaths of those buried in the graveyard at St. Peters Church, Cooks River (1839-1896). This includes, death and funeral notices, obituaries and inquests. Inquests have made us very aware of children drowning, being burned to death, or being overlain by their mother, as well as the more sensational deaths of adults. Children make up two thirds of the two and a half thousand burials in the graveyard. We are very much aware of the epidemiology of the time and of other contributory factors, such as the quality of the water supply, but such deaths didn't warrant an inquest. Added to our list is information from death certificates, including some from a recent appeal in the "In Search" column of the Daily Telegraph. Our work is in excess of eight hundred pages but we are no where near establishing the causes of death for the majority of those those buried at St. Peters.  The 175th anniversary of the first burial at will be commemorated this year, details below. We appeal to those, who in the past we have freely shared information, to provide us with death certificates or other family information so that we can begin understand the causes of death for those buried in our graveyard. We are aware, that prior to 1855, all that is recorded is what is in our burial register. It is surprising where some information leads us. We have death certificates for two babies buried at St. Peter's whose names, unlike other members of their family, do not appear in our register. We also have one death certificate, which appears to be in conflict with the inquest. A current project is putting headstone inscriptions into an electronic format.
