My ancestor was Dr. Robert Rogers (died 1849), predecessor to Dr. Bell in Carcoar. Dr. Bell's guide to medicine is being republished. It was written by him when he was in Windsor before moving to Carcoar. I am reproducing the invitation from the compiler, Lois Sabine. Anyone interested should contact Lois on the email below. "This is the invitation you have when you haven't got the invitations back from the printers and time is galloping on at speed. You will get the pretty invitation later. In the meantime, the following book launch is taking place. For the fortunate few of you who haven't suffered me rabbiting on about it, this is a transcription of Dr Bells original unpublished manuscript found by myself in the Mitchell Library years ago, it is now about to be launched, and you and yours are invited. Dr Bell's THE SETTLERS' GUIDE or Modern Domestic Medicine and Surgery, Windsor NSW 1849 is a 300 page book written for the use of the colonial settlers when they were out of reach of a medical man. The manuscript was written in Howes House on Thompsons Square Windsor in 1849. Howes House later became the Hawkesbury Museum, so where better to launch it 160 years to the day. When: Saturday 28th November 2009. 1.00pm - 2.30pm. Where: Hawkesbury District Museum, 8 Baker Street Windsor. Please let me know if you can come, and if you have any friends whom you might think would be interested. Personally I have found the Guide fascinating and quite remarkable at how our ancestors managed to survive not only the harsh conditions in the bush, but the medical treatment available from very well qualified practitioners. I look forward to hearing from you at lsabine@bigpond.com Lois Sabine " This has been a labour of love for Lois and will have a limited print run so this is a good opportunity for those interested in medical treatments in the mid-19th century in NSW. Dr.Bell might even have treated some of your ancestors if they lived in the Hawkesbury area. Valerie Wotton
