I can't find Anne's birth in Vic or NSW either. Our local library has genealogical groups in attendance. If there is one near you, I suggest that you take in your whole file and ask their advice. You can usually write and pay a fee, but by a personal interview you would get more specific guidance. For example, you have a shipping record. What was the ship, and what was its port of departure? The first rule of genealogy is to work backwards from the known. If the ship left from a Victorian port, it is likely (but not proved) that Anne was born in Victoria, but her birth wasn't registered. If it left from another State, perhaps you need to look there. Certainly take note of what the family tell you, but consider the possibility that it is inaccurate. We have all had instances of family traditions that turned out to be nothing but creative imagination. A myth can appear within one generation. For example, anybody born within a few years of the date of the Eureka Stockade is likely to feature in family stories as having been born there. My great-grandmother is one. Another was supposed to have "taken shelter" there, when it wasn't even a permanent structure. I have other more dramatic fables as well. HTH, Doug.
