    3. Hi Karen, > Unfortunately I forgot to mention that the marriage was > registered in 1840. The Data collected site starts with > marriages from 1854. Yup, that puts a completely different light on things, and my reply would have been very different had I known this little bit of information. ;-) The government did not get involved in the registration of marriages until the Marriages Act 1854 was passed and came into law, and marriages before this date won't be found at BDM Historical Records (http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/home/) Am I correct in assuming that you found this marriage listed on the NZSG CD "New Zealand Marriages 1836-1956" (http://www.genealogy.org.nz/Sales_11.aspx?CategoryId=11)? This early marriage is quite likely to be a part of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists' (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) Pre-1856 Marriages Collection (read about it in the Marriages disk introduction). You can also read about the collection on the web site if you log in as a member (ie, it is in the members-only part of the web site and not visible to the general public). Contact NZSG to find out more about the records they are holding. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard *** Please reply to the list/newsgroup *** -- Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Ewendyh65/>

    3. Hi everyone, I'm trying to date two old photographs. I have a man in a 3 piece suit (button trousers) neat stand up collar, with tie and a fob watch in the waistcoat. He has a boomerang moustache, grown past each side of his mouth. He is holding the corner of a wooden fence (prop.) At the bottom left hand corner (which has a small piece missing - looks like a carsboard backing) it has what looks like: 'L' L C Canning & Co - Star Studio 256 Bourke St East. (this is printed) The other photo is of 4 small children... A boy dress in a 3 piece short suit with a white frilled collar. The 3 girls in mid calf dark dresses, with broad collars lined with white lace and lace around the cuffs. Each dress has a huge black bow/sash. Along the bottom of the photograph (which is on cardboard) is 'imprinted': TALMA - Paris Panel - 119 Swanston Street Melbourne & at Sydney. Kind regards, Sherrie. --- http://www.silkweb.com.au/
