Where would be the best place to find Tasmanian divorce information for an event between 1955-1965? Is there any web resource available or does one need to contact registry of births, deaths marriages or should I be looking for court records? The 'couple' corncerned are both deceased but the divorce record may be my only avenue to finding more about them as I cannot find a marriage in Tasmania for them but the divorce definetly took place in Tas.
Hi Zanthia1967 Divorce was a state matter until the Commonwealth took over in about 1976. See http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/ Index to Tasmanian Divorces 1861-1920 This is an index to records relating to petitions for divorce under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1860, that were heard in the Tasmanian Supreme Court. The Archives Office holds records relating to these cases (SC89), which vary from a few to many pages of documents, but has indexed them only up to the above date. There are about 450 records arranged by petitioner's surname. It sounds like the Supreme Court has transferred all its files to the Archives Office but a quick call to Archives would be the best way to find out. cheers Jenny "zanthia1967" <zanthia1967@yahoo.com.au> wrote in message news:497d2d2b-adcb-40a3-ba24-e993bb151916@o31g2000vbi.googlegroups.com... > Where would be the best place to find Tasmanian divorce information > for an event between 1955-1965?
