    3. Hi, no expert on portuguese here, but I'd say the word 'fim' might be not 'purpose' but 'end' .. in that he met his end, his life was ended. Direct translation word by word is really hard, especially by machines, and it's a wonder that they do as well as they do. My meagre Italian and a Portugese dictionary makes me think that it might be something like this: A Grande Guerra pela Civilização The great war for civilisation Em 1897, por exemplo, John Sperrin Ross In 1897, for example, John Sperrin Ross teve um fim semelhante, had/met a similar end «assassinado por um fanático assassinated by a fanatic na cidade de Peshawar, in the city of Peshawar no Dia do Jubileu» on the day of jubilee. I found a similar line on a website that seems to be a spanish version of the same document: "En 1897, por ejemplo, John Sperrin Ross sufrió un destino similar, «asesinado por un fanático en la ciudad de Peshawar el día del Jubileo" which, since I know a crumb or 2 of Spanish, seems to bear out my guesses above.
