At first I thought that Geoff's question was a joke, but then I remembered 'The Barassi Line' as defined by the noted Australian historian, the late Professor Ian Turner, in his 'Ron Barassi Memorial Lecture' in 1978. To quote: 'Australia is divided by a deep cultural rift known as the Barassi Line. It runs between Canberra, Broken Hill, Birdsville and Maningrida (Arnhem Land) and it divides Australia between Rugby and Rules'. There's some debate about the exact course of the line (should Canberra be in or out; how much of Queensland plays AFL and so on), but if Geoff's question is serious, then he's obviously from the east of it!
