Howell, who re- signed his commission in the Citizen Forces and enlisted as a private, passed out of the school as sergeant, and was sent to Egypt. After a stay of two months his battalion was ordered to England for train- ing. He obtained a transfer to another battalion as a private, was again appointed sergeant, and left for France, and within a month was in some heavy fighting. After sniping in no man's land he was chosen for training in the Royal Flying Corps, but was ill in a hospital for two weeks. At his examination he thought his absence of two weeks would make him lose his chance, instead he came out top.
