Some years ago now, the NSW Land Titles Office in Macquarie street held Deeds Cases containing old deeds to property. I recall the guide telling of a researcher opening one case and finding an old 1820s picture of his rural property painted, signed, dated and then stored away as a link in the unbroken chain of evidence proving title to his land.
