On the 13th March 1841 two Bounty immigants, John FORSYTH and Elizabeth GILLIES, were married in the Scots Church situated on York between Jamieson and Margaret streets, Sydney. The church register entry shows the groom's signature certifying that he was a member of, and held communion with, the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. The service was conducted by the Reverend McINTYRE. A memorial plaque to this Rector can still be seen in St Georges Scottish church near Market St. It seems that the 2 churches belonging to the same denomination were known by 3 different titles. Were they all different flavours of the same religion and if not, which one is correct? Thoughts anyone? From the Victorian High Country,Robert G
Dear Bob, The history of the Presbyterian Church in Australia from what I can read shows much division based around loyalty and basic interpretation differences. The original structure appears not to be as centralised as the, say, Catholic or Anglican churches. With a lot of googling and back-tracking I managed to find some articles to help you. Note the name "Scots Kirk" rather than "Scots Church" brings up lots of web pages. Home page for Scots Kirk, Sydney http://www.scots-sydney.org.au/ McIntyre joined Lang's Synod in January 1838, taught at Lang's Australian College, and acted as Lang's locum tenens while Lang was overseas from January 1839 to March 1841 Here is a brief biography of Rev William McIntyre: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_McIntyre_(minister) Rev.William McIntyre mentioned here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Forbes_(minister) A brief explanation of the fragmentation of the Scots / Presbyterian congregation http://www.dictionaryofsydney.org/entry/st_stephens_presbyterian_church_macquari e_street or http://tinyurl.com/77g2tro See also on this page under "The Presbyterian church" http://www.dictionaryofsydney.org/entry/scots and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presbyterian_Church_of_Eastern_Australia Discussing the pro's and con's of Presbyterian church history is best done in private correspondence. It can be horribly misinterpreted on an OPEN FORUM can lead to much anguish, intensely heated arguments and at worst flaming, so I'm not prepared to go down that track. Don't forget, Google Archives EVERYTHING, and it hangs around FOREVER, except private e-mails I have tried above to stick to historical facts so personal sensitivities are not trespassed Cheers, Tony Moore (Castle Hill, NSW) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ On 13 Dec 2011 at 14:50, BOB wrote: From: BOB <[email protected]> Subject: SCOTS CHURCH-CHURCH OF SCOTLAND Date sent: Tue, 13 Dec 2011 14:50:56 +1100 Organization: BigPond To: [email protected] > On the 13th March 1841 two Bounty immigants, John FORSYTH and Elizabeth > GILLIES, were married in the Scots Church situated on York between > Jamieson and Margaret streets, Sydney.
