Is there some kind soul who has access to Ancestry Australia who wouldn't mind doing a look-up for me, please? I am housebound at the moment, so can't go out to a library or Gen Soc. The source is the Police Gazettes 1862-1930, roll 3598, year 1915, page 116. The details are: Frederick Fish NSW 10 March 1915 Page 116. With thanks, Alwynne
Have since found an error in that Richard Shoobridge and Mary Cheston genealogy, courtesy of the 'Thomas Diprose and Elizabeth Children Diprose of Kent and Van Diemen's Land' Book by Eliz Parkes and Jean Doggett. The genealogy now goes back to the Childrens family in 14th C. I hadn't realised that there had been changes. It certainly is a pity as it was, as Danni says, a useful way of finding people especially since many phone numbers are not listed in the white pages. There is a good summary of the current status at http://guides.slsa.sa.gov.au/content.php?pid=319622&sid=2615950 I hadn't realised that from 2009 the hard copy rolls were only produced by electorate and not by State as they were from 1988 - 2008. They won't be available in any form in the future. Perhaps the solution will be to nominate as an independent candidate in an election ;) It will cost you a $1000 though and you need 100 supporters. Candidates have access to the rolls. Anne Young On 1 October 2013 17:00, <genanz-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > Today's Topics: > > 1. I picked up a piece of paper in the public library yesterday, and decided on a whim to go and look at Ancestry.com for my grandmother who was born in Buninyong. Her name was Frances Elloner Cahill! I had always misspelt Elloner, and I think she did too! My mother, Frances Ena Ryan was one of the five children: Eileen, Adrian, Ena, Mabs and Kevin (Arthur). I live in Mt Helen (Ballarat) and surprisingly that was the name of the house where the Ryans lived in Essendon (71 Buckley Street). what else do you need to know? How come you are tracking the Ryan clan? Michael Bird 2114 Geelong Rd MT HELEN 3350 0439845577
Hi Beryl, I have at least 4 relatives buried at Will Rook between 1879 and 1921, all members of James Robertson's family. If you are interested I can give you further details. It is a very sad but interesting story. James first married Sarah Langford in 1854 (the Langford/Sidebottom families were prominent pioneer settlers at Mickleham) They had two children but Sarah and both the children died within days of each other in 1861 and were buried at Ballarat. James returned to Mickleham and married Sarah's widowed cousin Elizabeth Langford whose husband had died 2 years after their marriage leaving her with a child called Grace Blennerhassett. James and Sarah had a large family and he, two of their infant children and another son are all buried at Will Rook. Grace Blennerhassett became a teacher and moved to Lower Thornton where she met and married John Walter Barnewall. John was a distant relative of Sir John Aylmer, who had the Baronetcy of Crickstown Castle, County Meath who died without issue and unexpectedly John Walter inherited the title and became Sir John Barnewall Bart; 11th Baronet of Crickstown Castle and Grace, Lady Grace Barnewall. It's a very interesting story, full of sadness, coincidence, travail and happiness. So typical of our country's early history. More detail can be found in a book on the history of the Langford/Sidebottom family that has just recently been published. They came from Cheshire and arrived in Melbourne in the very first years of settlement. I can provide further detail to anyone interested in their story. Hello Group The Australian electoral Commission's changes to our (the public's) usage of the Electoral Rolls has been mentioned on this group. For any who missed it, the changes mean we are no longer able to check the electoral rolls for relatives who have moved, or need to be found for reunions, or given access to the family history. This access has been invaluable to me for tracing lateral lines. Used properly, I have never invaded anyone's privacy. With the recent change in Federal Government, I intend to write to, and lobby, the new Minister responsible for the AEC. I anyone else feels as strongly as I do on this issue, please also write to: Special Minister of State Senator Michael Ronaldson (Electoral Office) Level 17, 90 Collins Street, Melbourne Ph 9650 0255 Cheers Danni
Many thanks to all the kind folk who replied to my query. Richard actually had another son (older, on board) named Robert, who was my GG grandfather. The reason I was after the death cert was that as he was an Irish emigrant I have not been able to find out anything at all about his parents, and I was hoping (against hope) I may glean some further info. Oh well, I will need to turn to other sources. Cheers to all, John Maher.

Dear John, There is nothing recorded for deaths at sea on the SA pioneer CD's However, you might like to look at the passenger list transcription for the Shackamaxon at: http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/shackamaxon1853.shtml or http://tinyurl.com/ka6sxdb The Graham family is listed as originating from Tyrone......... GRAHAM .............. Richard 43yrs Agr. Labourer - Tyrone ...... died at sea.... Rebecca 34yrs .................... Arthur 13yrs ................. 601/1 .......... Mary Jane 9yrs .............. Susannah 7yrs ................ Isabella 7yrs...., died at sea Hugh 2 yrs The two deaths most likely caused by Scarlet Fever. It would seem that due to extreme negligence, it meant that no records were created and thus there was no death registration ever recorded. The only extra information comes from Richard's 13 year old son Arthur (ref: 601/1) for B index ........ which is explained in a footnote:............. " Sources: State Library South Australia, official passenger lists, mainly of immigrants arriving in South Australia under United Kingdom assisted passage schemes, 1847-1886 GRG 35/48a (formely ACC 313); Sydney Shipping Gazette; South Australian Register; The South Australian Government Gazette; Biographical index SA 1836-1885 (the B-index column indicates individuals who may be found in that index, with corresponding reference number for further research) ; FreeBMD ; 1851 UK census'" The SA Marriages index has Rebecca GRAHAM, a widow, no age given, marrying Michael TEE in the Adelaide Wesleyan Chapel on 06 /10 /1853 Ref 16 /233 They lived at "Red Hill", Harrogate South Aust. Arthur married three times 1. Ann Lester BALL, 2. Eliza BENNETT, 3. Florence Ann BOND Hugh married once. Mary Ann OVERTON Mary Jane married once.
