    1. Unassisted passenger list query
    2. fabiochris
    3. Hi Listers I am hoping to be able to start knocking down one of my brick walls with the help from anybody that is able to please. From the PROV I have found on the unassisted passenger list a Bridget Kelly and a James Kelly. I believe these could be my GGrandmother and her brother James as the dates for their ages match pretty well. If someone would do a look up of the microfiche I would be able to either eliminate or continue to consider these folk possible family. The year is 1886, month AUG, ship is the M E WATSON, Port is B, Fiche # 470, page # 001 for both Bridget and James. I have no history of Bridget between her birth in 1864 Lower Ballingarry, Co. Tipperary and her marriage in 1890 in Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Melbourne, Victoria and then in 1893 she came out to New Zealand. If I can confirm that Bridget and James are brother and sister on the ME WATSON then I can start looking for James Kelly in Melbourne. Many thanks Chris New Zealand

    3. Lesley, In case you've not already checked this: http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/ under the index to Register of Assisted British Immigrants 1839-1871, has a list of people on "Herald of the Morning" which apparently had at least two trips to Melbourne (1857 and 1859). I think they may be passengers only but there may be more information available from the records at PROVic (if you are able to get to Melbourne). 3. Assuning that it was a British-registered ship then its crew list, at that date, should be at The National Archives (of the UK). But you will need to find its port of registry to locate it in series BT 98 there - not something that you can do over the net. 3. A useful reference, Sherrie -- thanks. However, the word 'encyclopaedia' (what a pity that an Australian university should use the American variation) suggests to me an all-embracing coverage of the subject, but that is clearly not the case. It seems to be a quite Victoria-centric treatment, notwithstanding the reference to Australia in the title. There is, for example, no mention at all of Rocky River or Nundle or Lambing Flat (Young) or Grenfell, all significant gold-producing areas in NSW. Maybe it is a work in progress and will eventually cover all aspects of gold in Australia -- let's hope so.
