Can anyone do a look up please for more information about Edith, she was born around 1881 in Sheffield Tasmania, married 2 Nov 1899 in Sheffield to Robert James Thurston, farmer from NZ. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Are there any books that can be recommended of Tasmania in her early days? Many thanks Julie

Hi! Everyone, Can anyone tell me anything about a James Sarney sentence for Life sent to Tasmania for stealing two sheep 1836. So sorry have no other info. I love the idea of a Train, Hobart to Bridgewater, I grew up in the late 40's and 50's in the Moonah area and often caught a train to go see my Grandmother who lived on the Glebe Hobart. Quite often catching it at Sunderland Street Station. And of course went to most of the Regatta's by train. Humm still remember the smell of trains. Earlier this year I & hubby went from Flinders Street Station in Melbourne to Werribee - now that was a delight. Cheers Gail Come and see some of my artwork http://freewebs.com/gailburnart
As of this evening (Monday) some are already there, from Aug 1842 until Dec 1842. There are a few gaps. Doug. I am asking for help in tracing descendants of Rupert Hewgill (probably in South Australia) whose mother was Ellen (nee Patton). A widow, she married Thomas Kinley Hamilton in 1884 in Adelaide. I believe that a book written by Rupert is in the National Library. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Patricia, Kiama

This is a bit out of the usual for our lists , but I know that like me there are many history lovers on the lists that love not only ships bur trains. I will jump on a train as quickly as I will a ship. It has come to my notice that there is a proposal to run a train survice from Hobart to Bridgewater. Below are some of the meeting that are to be held in the next few weeks. I think this needs the support of the public, so please try and attend one of the public or precinct meetings where visitors are always welcome. Not only a step back in time but a step forward into the future as well. I spent my holiday in June this year finding out about the historical train rides from Cairns and spent two days of sheer pleasure seeing the countryside without the worry of speeding cars. We have a beautiful river its a pity we can't see at our leasure. Thanx John Yes that is a possibility. There was a GOODE who came to SA around 1850 with his family he created quite a bit of history in the districts of South Australia. ( he is in the Australian Biographical Dictionary) And i was searching around because i know my grandfather (d.1965) an engineer built a crane in Whyalla, the largest of its kind at the time of erection (Mum has the original architecture drawings). And we felt he may have stayed with relatives, but have found no connecting points as yet. The family was basically Queensland orientated, but who is to say where his job took him over time for short periods, as i found him living in Melbourne from the Censis, which i wasnt aware of previously. cheers Jewelly Shift your problems to challenges.
