    3. John Hinchey was born 1862 in Victoria Australia and died 26 Oct 1935 in Waihi. He married Sarah Elizabeth Macan 13 Jun 1892. Invercargill Otago NZ I made an error in my earlier message I had the incorrect wife. I am looking for his parents and siblings the Hinchey name may also be spelt Hinchy I also not sure if they came from GB or Ireland they are a Catholic family so Ireland is a possibility thanks Cheryl ----- Original Message ----- From: <genanz-request@rootsweb.com> To: <genanz@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 19, 2009 5:40 PM Subject: GENANZ Digest, Vol 4, Issue 474 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Today's Topics: > > 1. Joanne is quite right, there are trees on Ancestry which include Alma ROSSAU, with a husband of Charles William SMITH. I looked at 2. I don't know if you are new to genealogy or just to the list. If you are new to genealogy be wary of accepting anything that appears on Ancestry as they are often wrong and could send you off in the wrong direction. If you're an old hand you'll probably know that anyway. For example, I decided to check some trees for a convict I have been researching and found lots of trees and in those trees I found lots of wrong information. The marriage year for the convict was wrong in at least 5 of the trees and gave no date but all had the same wrong year. One tree had the right year but the wrong date and month - this was the most accurate tree and the others were all wildly wrong but clearly it was the same convict. One of the trees for your people has some oddities. Prob 1) there is a female born before Charles William SMITH (the son born in 1890 according to that tree) who is listed as 'living'. It might be a clue that there was an earlier birth of a female than you know about for Charles and his first wife but clearly if this person was still alive they'd be about 120. Prob 2) all children who appear from the female born before Charles William (born 1890) and including John and Margaret are listed as being the children of Charles William SMITH and Alma ROSSAU. There is no mention on that tree of a first marriage. That tree also gives the name for John as being John Augustine (not August) but the birth year is the same as you gave. The other tree says that the mother of Charles William (B 1890) is Susan WALES born Victoria in 1870 and died in 1900 in Victoria. Susan SMITH is not a great help in the unique names when hunting for deaths but it's something I guess. Do you have the certs for the two children you mentioned? If you don't then I would recommend you try to get them to confirm the mother's name. Perhaps you could ask yourself why. In my post to which you responded, I made a comment. I didn't make any form of request. I didn't reply to Jen. You think others should be kind and helpful and so do I but there are limits. That is where foilbes come in. My post to which you responded merely mentioned that we all have foibles. Another of my foibles is that I really get irritated and cross when people don't bother to understand what it is they are replying to. I have made a decision to not sign posts, to not give a location and additonally, to mung my addy. I have valid reasons for that and family historians are THE one group of people who SHOULD have sufficient imagination and/or experience to think of some of the reasons why that may be so. Perhaps, even though I was only making a comment, you think you were being kind and helpful in telling me that I should sign, should give a location and that I should share because otherwise I'd get no help for something I hadn't asked for anyway. (again unsigned and equally as grumpy and rude as my last response to you because you aren't thinking)

What do the birth certs for the children say about their mother's name? Since you haven't been able to yet locate a death for Charles the next best bet might be from the children's records. You didn't mention in which State the children were born but in that time frame (the 1890s) a birth cert for the 2 children that you seem surest about (John and Margaret) should give you details of both parents and thus 'should' include the full name of the mother. With a bit of luck it might be a more unique name that the other more common names and thus make your search for a marriage a bit easier. > Thanks, Regards, Best wishes, etc > Jen > From sunny Melbourne > "jen" <jgil6052@bigpond.net.au> wrote in message > news:mswLm.54850$ze1.23458@news-server.bigpond.net.au... >> hi >> am new to this group would be pleased with some help >> i have charles william smith born redfern nsw 17 july 1870 was married- >> assuming in nsw -(unsure) they had 3 children charles william born abt >> 1891 john august born 1892 margaret ann born 1895 - according to second >> marraige to alma marie rossau in 1907 it states in certificate that >> first wife passed away in 1900 >> >> > >

    3. > Also can any one tell me how I can put the adoption into Family Tree Maker > apart from making notes in the notes section. The answer depends on what version of Family Tree Maker you are using. But the general principle is that you make the child appear as a child in the family group of both their natural parents and their adoptive parents. In my version FTM 2005, there are two ways to do it. 1. If the adoptive parents are not already in your Family Tree Maker file, Look at the family group page where the child appears (as a child, not as a parent). Choose "People > Other Parents" and then "Create New Parents". 2. If the adoptive parents are already in your Family Tree Maker file, go to their Family Group page and do "People > Fix Relationship > Attach Child" for that couple and then select the child they adopted from the list. Having done this, the child should appear in both family groups. If you click on the child in either one of the two family group pages and then select the "People > Other Parents" you can edit the details relating to the child have more than one set of parents if anything still needs fixing. 3. Hello Listers, When I sent my previous email to the list, about including names and addresses in emails, I just thought I was contributing to a discussion on that topic. The subject line did not seem to refer to the topic, and I would normally have checked to the archives to be sure I was on topic before expressing my view, but this time I didn't. I was unaware of the initial request with that subject line from Jen for information about her SMITH family and I have emailed her separately to apologise for my part in being off topic. I have been on this list for many years and realise it is gatewayed with the soc.genealogy.australia+nz newsgroup. Being unmoderated it allows for more flexibility in discussions and topics, but the down side is that it does not stop bullying, intimidation and plain bad manners displayed by a very few of the listers, especially to newcomers, like Jen, who are learning and still feeling their way on unfamiliar ground. Lindsay Graham's reply to her, which I belatedly found after looking through the archives, is exactly the kind of welcome, complete with helpful information newbies should be given in response to their enquiries. Some others who posted were unnecessarily abrupt in their attitude, and behaved like a bunch of school children ganging up on someone in the playground. The response I received to my previous email from one of the listers who had also posted to Jen, has justified the view I expressed previously about email, which is, I do not normally reply to an email that does not provide the sender's name or general locality. I made an exception and was subject to an unbelievable response from that person. As a result, I will not be posting to this list again, but if I have offended any of the fair-minded subscribers to this list by being off topic in my previous email, please accept my genuine apology. Good wishes, Lynne ====================================== Lynne Fiddick Central Coast, NSW, AUSTRALIA ======================================
