    1. Re: Daily Telegraph Newspaper & Ryerson Index
    2. Lindsay Graham
    3. The Ryerson Index people are primarily indexers, although some are willing to do lookups. Lookups are available for quite a few newspapers, not just the SMH. It seems that some people are just not looking carefully enough at the Ryerson site. To see which papers are available, I suggest you work carefully through the following steps: * go to the home page at www.ryersonindex.org and click on "Requesting a lookup" in the left-hand column; * this takes you to a page explaining that some SMH entries are available online, so you can do those yourself without having to ask for a lookup; * if you want an earlier SMH or a different paper, click on "Request a Ryerson Lookup" on the RHS bottom of the page; * this takes you to a page headed "Requesting Lookups" -- first click on the link at the end of the second line "For a list of available lookups, see this list."; * then you have a page headed "List of available lookups", providing a detailed list of which papers, and for which periods, lookups are available; * if the paper/period you want is there, hit the Back button on your browser to take you back to the "Requesting Lookups" page; and * read all of that page very carefully and, if there are no other avenues available to you, fill in and submit the lookup request. Be aware, however, that (as I said above) Ryerson is primarily an indexing service, not a lookup service. There are some who believe that the Ryerson indexers should not be expected to do lookups, and if the lookup service becomes overloaded, it may well disappear. Having said all that, perhaps I can help Hayley with her original request. I try to go to the National Library once a week (although it did not happen this week), and I may be able to look up the Daily Telegraph notice that you want. Perhaps you could contact me off-list, Hayley, and I'll see what I can do. Lindsay Graham, Canberra Hayley wrote: > Unfortunately our state (WA) library is one that does not have this > newspaper. I have had Vista, Digger and AVRI and Word 2003 all working happily together for a couple of years. I have now upgraded my operating system to Windows 7 and everything is still working well. (What version of Word are you using?) You do have the option to download Open Office. This will open all of the documents that you already have saved with Word. This is a free suite of Office programs that all work very well. > http://www.openoffice.org/ Julie

No longer can researchers get lookups for the Daily Telegraph, nor even Melbourne's 'The Age'. No doubt there are others now missing too. This is a volunteer service, and I guess they need more volunteers and more donations to keep this service rolling. I'm grateful for past help, and look forward to a time in the future when I can give some hours back. Danni

    3. It's sometimes hard to understand how some people's minds work, Lynne. All I can say is that there are a lot of us out here who agree with you wholeheartedly, and wish you well. The one thing that I can say is that GenANZ is a whole lot better than some newsgroups, where a simple question can lead to a real flame war that is totally unjustifiable. Most people on GenANZ really do try to help, even where it is a new subscriber/poster who has done the wrong thing (although the 'wrong thing' would be a bit hard to define, wouldn't it?) through lack of thought or lack of knowledge. I guess we just have to put up with the occasional exception, and try not to respond in kind (although I must admit I find it hard to resist sometimes). Do continue to contribute and help, Lynne -- most of us really appreciate it. I'm failry certain that HM FISCHER had a brother that played a game or two for Melbourne in the 1910s - so maybe the family were good demons? cheers robert Julie wrote: > robert.j wrote: >> Hi, >> >> Wondering whether anybody has any info on Sergeant H M FISCHER - head >> of the Geelong Police station for a while in the 1930s before taking >> over the same role at the Hawthorn police station. >> >> On his retirement from Victoria Police in the late 1930s a newspaper >> report mentions that Fischer was a prominent football player - >> >> anybody got any idea which team Fischer may have played with? >> >> BTW .. Hi, Wondering whether anybody has any info on Sergeant H M FISCHER - head of the Geelong Police station for a while in the 1930s before taking over the same role at the Hawthorn police station. On his retirement from Victoria Police in the late 1930s a newspaper report mentions that Fischer was a prominent football player - anybody got any idea which team Fischer may have played with? BTW .. Henry Matheson Fischer was a 1st cousin 3 times removed - thanking you Robert writing from the blue Dandenongs...
