    3. >From The Argus, 15 February 1922 -- CONSTABLE SHOT. ALLEGED ASSAILANT CHASED. Revolver Shots in Scrub. ECHUCA, Tuesday--Shortly before 4 o'clock this afternoon Constable Bassett, of the Moama police, was instructed by Sergeant Goodwin to quell a disturbance at the home of Thomas Ahearn, in Victoria street. As the constable approached the house it is alleged that John Ahearn, aged about 24 years, rushed to a sulky standing near by, and, grasping a Winchester rifle, fired it. A bullet struck Bassett on the right arm, fracturing the bone, and embedding itself in the flesh. The constable was removed to a private hospital and the bullet extracted. Sergeant, Goodwin meanwhile went in search of John Ahearn, who had driven off in the gig in the direction of Deniliquin. Mounted on a bicycle, the sergeant overtook John Ahearn about five miles from Moama, where Ahearn is said to have unharnessed the horse and taken to the bush. Sergeant Goodwin says that he called upon the man to surrender, and that immediately Ahearn put up his hands, but suddenly turned and bolted through the timber. Two shots from the sergeant's revolver brought Ahearn to a standstill. Ahearn, handcuffed, was brought to Moama and locked up on a charge of having shot with intent to murder. He will be brought before the Police Court to-morrow, when a remand will probably be applied for. ------------------------------------------------ Historic Australian Newspapers, 1803 to 1954 http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home Aherns in Australian Records http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahcrim.htm ------------------------------------------------

Almost two years ago I purchased and installed Family Tree Maker 2008, but it performance was so inadequate that I reverted back to using Version 11 and am still using it. Family Tree Maker 2010 is now on the market and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with it and would care to comment on it compared with the old Version 11. Thanks Bob [my post begins here - prefixes not showing] Hi Bob... I recently up dated to the 2009 FTM version and just posted in another thread my response to that below. If 2009 is anything to go by, i'd stick to what you have...i won't be recommending FTM to anyone in the future from V16 on. My response in a previous post: I got 2009 as a birthday present and having no end of problems...it's changed a lot of my facts to different titles, duplicated information in records and missed connecting some marriages [at least those i've found so far] with spouses. I also find it very clunky and backwards and forwards all over the place to use. I'm not impressed at all and since transferring, have found many complaints about it all over the net. I won't be recommending to anyone that's for sure nor will i be updating with FTM in the future, which is a shame because it's what i've used and felt confident with up until now [i've been using since the very first versions]. My main file has over 12000 individual and it's made life a nightmare having to check every single fact and all the notes after i produce trees [i get lots of queries on line for hundreds of names], to ensure that i amend the information before i save as files to send. I have my old version and files still saved under that too, but inputted a lot of information after i updated to 2009 so i'm going to have to suss out what i did and i think i'll be going back to V16. Mine has a "hide" button. But indirectly, you are both still feeding the troll, by keeping his thread alive. There was a newsgroup thread about a murder case. It just wouldn't drop off the bottom of my displayed list. That was because two guys had decided to use it to send brief "tweets" back and forth for weeks afterwards, all totally irrelevant to the original topic. Doug.
